Hi guys,

Been working with a few S2000s for awhile now, and lately as the early AP1s have aged, I have found that there a a few S2000s burning oil. 3 oils I have used from these jobs, Mobil 1 5W-40, Lubrimax 5W-40 and Cusco 5W-30.

When the customer first came in, we filled it up with mobil 1 and 3 mths later, he came back in complaining that the oil light came on. Sure enough, 3 mths since the oil service, half the oil was burned.

Then I proceeded to the Aussie branded Lubrimax fully syn 5W-40, 2 mths later, he complained more than 1/2 of the oil burnt.

Last service, we used the new Cusco synthetic 5W-40 and I just met him today and he reckons that the engine had survived 1500km with very slight engine oil lost.

Any feedback on the preferred oil you guys use or have similar problems? Cheers.

Your customers need to check their oil levels every 2 weeks. That is part of routine car ownership.

Yes he does, esp now after the oil issue. You made a good pt, but way off tangent, was trying to discuss on the type of oil that works best for the S2K.

Actually his point is right in line.

The S2000 is not some econobox that only ever has it's bonnet lifted by the mechanic. Oil levels should never get below the mid mark on the dipstick (500ml down) no matter how much oil it uses. If yours uses more, check it more frequently.

If the oil light comes on that doesn't mean oil is a little low, that means oil is so low there wasn't enough to maintain sufficient oil pressure to work the sensor switch. Drive it like that and you're gunna cause catastrophic wear, and yes, you'll then use more oil.

I used Mobil 1 10x30 for the first 7 years of my car's life without problems. I haven't used Lubrimaxx so I can't comment but I will say if the oil light came on and the driver kept driving I expect the damage has already been done.

Yes I agree, very likely some form of damage has been done. And yes the dipstick is there for any diligent car owner to check the oil level of the vehicle especially a 10yr old car.

Quote form Walc7 for S2000.com

"Ok... I have used Mobile 1 synthetic 10w-30 on my 2002 spa yellow, and the damn thing burns oil when revved high.

I called the honda dealer up, and they said that the Honda racing team NEVER uses synthetic on the S2k's... especially in heat, it turns to water."

Personal opinion, 10W-40 is the best for Australia especially during the summer 30-40 degrees heat!

Anyone here uses any other oil. Comparing notes here.

Will try in the next few wks to get some dyno figures from my Dynapack with the different oil and filters used on the S2K.
