Hi guys, has anybody had any experience running this sort of setup? From what i've read its quite effective. Basically just want to know, would it be a good idea for my eg or am I better off going with the usual injen setup? Here is a pic of my engine bay, in yellow is my proposed setup. I'd like to ad that i've never actually seen an off the shelf kit for this so if somebody makes one i'd like to know also.

Effective yes... but you wont have the space to fit everything and make the air flow freely. thats the problem.

I'd think you'd be better off cutting a hole where your SRI filter is and dress it up to help the SRI breathe.

You mean a hole for a cooling duct to the current filter location?

Hmmm....gruppeM dc5/ep3 style. Anything can be done but will require alot of fab work in ur case. Probably better off with a cai style in terms of ease.

Longer tuned intake pipe = far better than any short pipe any day.
Point is there are kits that proven work - injen for example.

i was gonna do something like this on my old carby ED

cardboard mockup, was gonna make it out of either aluminium, or fibreglass.

had the back of the bonnet spaced up by about 12mm, it would draw air in from the gap. sadly never got around to finishing it

Like a NACA scoop, face it to your SRI and that will be enough

Ps I'm kinda against the hood scoop/shaker intake thing. because there is no space for the air to "settle down", no bufferzone/ air reserve (thats what the cai tube and airboxeis for). Any turbulence or negative pressure at the filter will directly affect the engine, besides, we aren't talking about great v8's here our small capacity engines are more... Precise and delicate.

Isn't longer less responsive? From what I've read the cowl has more air pressure than any other spot in the car and its barely in the engine bay? Injen is my next option if this doesnt work out because like you said its a proven kit that works, but I believe this kit may work better

@Neopolin: I'd only be considering this if there was an off the shelf kit for it. I guess its more effective on a k series motor as the throttle in further away from the cowl.

Trism that looks pretty awesome, would be interesting to see the results if you did it.

Freedoops: I actually dont mind the looks of that type of 'concave' scoop, but not willing to cut any holes in the bonnet as im keeping it stealth for the moment. thanks for the suggestion though

Mate just look around what most race cars / drag cars etc use. Not a cowl facing up close to the throttle body !

I'm not disagreeing with you mate I'd just like some more evidence other than 'everybody else does it'. As far as I can see a cowl setup is just as cold as a cai but with more airflow. The only disadvantage is the air has less time to settle. I've seen alot of race cars use cowl induction. Maybe it is no good on a b series because the throttle location as compared with a k series I don't know. This style of intake is also going to be more legal and less obtrusive in the engine bay and the air won't need to make a long journey through a boiling hot pipe.

Have a look at mx5 cowl intakes. However the intake pipe loops all the way around the front of the motor, giving the air time to settle.

Yeah I've seen those, probably the same distance as a k series throttle to cowl. So in summing up this thread, cowl intakes are good for k series but not for b series

Difference is that the k intake is at the front and b at rear thus giving the k longer tract.

Did mention that already but thanks...
