Time finally has come for my Em1 to get a new motor.
I been looking at b20 conversion, but things keep adding up.
So far after reading 100+ posts on b20's and getting quotes it has added up to 5.4 grand dive away (not including rta fee's)
My questions are, doing the b20 for that extra few Nm's worth it? over the b18cr setup?
I could sell my b16a2 to get approx 2grand back if i did a b18cr conversion and that could go towards rebuilding the b18cr down the road if I reck the b18c and it brings the b18c conversion price down to ~3.5k out of pocket.
Will RTA (rego, blueslip) /Cops (highway patrol) be a bitch for the b20 setup?
I'm not fussed about the power output. All i want is screaming vtec that can run atleast 13's - low 14's 1/4 mile.
At the moment I'm leanning towards the b18 as the car will go to my little brother when i hit full's *2 years* and it leaves future project space if k20 becomes cheaper or b18c wit a b20 bottom.
And also whats a itr gridle? some people say its important to make power if u wanna rev to 8k. I tired to google it, it says it womens underwear wtf??

If you dont want to be hassle by cops then go for the b18cR/7 motor setup. At least engine can be registered without engineers report.

you could also opt for a h2b conversion. Jdm h22 (147kw) prob around 2k, b16 tranny maybe 1k + another 1k for the tranny conversion kit. Labour maybe 2k? would be damn quick! 2.2L displ torque!

I also like to rev to 8k on a daily basis. Not a hoon, just enjoy my vtec on quiet roads.
And also which gearbox would you guys run on a b20? atm i have a s80 running gear wit LSD. I finally got my b16 tranny off my mechanic, collecting dust in storage.

i say look around for builders for b20.
u already have the head and gearbox for the conversion itself.
5k sounds like your going all out on the motor.
u can boost the car and it would be a great daily :)

if you have 5k and already had the vtec head and gb and you want to change the bottom end b20block , that can be done easily. but i wouldnt recommend u do that with that money , Y??
1. B20block with b18cr/7/16a head hardcord tune wont give you 150kw atw even you do all the computer tuning and weight dedection this and that
2. Not worth to doing it coz its happen many time that when its not done properly , the engine will blowup , its happened and its proven with some of us here.
3. If you go all out with the money just to chasing the touge and sound , sell you head +gearbox and save a bit more buy a package of k20/24 is much better the b20 bottom end , and more rare done before then b20bottom/end
4. Resell the em1 with b20block/vtec head is not gona give you anywhere more then 12k , so why bother ...
5. RTA and police issue : had to get a blue slip + enginee cert ( if you on Ps, you cant drive it ) , anything with enginee cert even its still NA, still NO ! NO ! with cops.
you need to change the engine number with rta if you want to be legal , if you dont and if you get pull over , your car will get inbound and wrecked , insurance wont cover!!!
6. Insurance gona cost you heaps and heaps , trust me gona cost you over 2.8k if you under 25, and had to only done with justcar, and if your engine is not recongise with rta, anything happen to you or crashed, wont cover as well!!
good luck

If you had a b18c7 with 4.7 gbox you wouldnt be botherd with the extra torque from the 2ltr block, espesially if your mainly concerned about top end out put

Props for having actually done research!
I suggest B20VTEC.
Why go B18C? It's only 200cc increase, and if you're getting a bigger engine I think just go 2L, forget going half-way. B20VTEC makes great torque. It's pretty freaking awesome to feel, and I rate it much higher than either B16A or B18CR (having felt all)! Sure it might not rev out to 9,000 so easily like a B18C will with some tweaking, but for daily driving the torque is much more useful, you'll still make more than enough HP, and your VTEC crossover will be satisfying.
IMO:
B16A head (use your current one, get rid of the block)
B20 block (duh...)
S80 GBox with 4.7FD and LSD (awesome piece to put into the mix)
I also suggest you try to increase your budget by at least 50% just in case - you'll find problems, trust me. Hoses here, mounts maybe, fluids, belts, water pump, gaskets, seals and all the other things you forget about. Longer header than B16A header, good idea to upgrade intake (TB/IM), cat and cat-back etc etc.
Good luck. Please make a build thread if you go ahead with it :)
Also maybe PM Mike (DNYALL (http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/member.php?4218-DNYALL)) or check out his worklog (http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?145481-Mike-s-dedicated-track-day-Warrior-EM1) since he has an EM1 with B20VTEC. He might be able to suggest a few tips or something :)

personally i would always rather stick to a motor that has been through the gauntlet of R&D from the manufacturer, partcularly for a car that will regularly be put to duty on the streets... i'd just want the reliability personlly...
If it was to be a toy car yeh sure i'd look at it, but even then id stick to the c7 just because i like the engines characteristics...
