With any car second hand theres a chance anything could break.

Its just a risk you take.

Get a manual one. Gear box will definitely die at some stage just like everything else, just a matter of when.

They fixed the gearbox problem with the 99+ models. Only the 97-98 had issues i believe

A) Agree with Safety, just get a manual if you can drive one.
B) drsilliez is correct, most problems were sorted after the 98 model.

How was the gearbox changed? Was is rebuilt or replaced completely with one from a later vehicle?
If it has a 99+ gearbox then it should be ok, slow, but ok.

rubbish....3 gearboxes here, and that's when the car was new, the first time it was replaced with the last gearbox as they sold me the same shite. Get the manual.

What colour is it as a matter of interest?

Was told the same thing. Autos 97-98 have problems. My mate works for John Blair HONDA in Vic. He said many Preludes from 97-98 are back now coz of gearbox problems. 99+ Auto are the better ones IF you must get an auto. But agree with the rest, get the manual! Good luck

I agree with the rest if the boys.

You will have a better time driving a manual. I had a tiptronic then bought a manual. Ain't looking back :)
99+ Auto's will give you less hassles if you do go that way.

Good luck!

What do you guys think of a 1990 prelude in auto?
does the car perform just as well? reliability issues with the gearbox?

Slower than the manual and less reliable. I'd still recommend a manual.
