so the engines a b18c2 and the gear crunches only in gear 3, however if i shift into it gently it doesn't crunch.
also i hear a winding sound when i'm cruising on gear 5.
maybe its the syncro? if so how much/how hard is it to replace? (possible DIY?)

Have you thought about changing the gearbox fluid?

As above, and no probably not DIY for you (synchro I mean). Not an 'easy' job exactly

Try changing the fluid as above, it may come out with metal shavings within the oil. So chuck some fresh new oil in it.
And i suggest Honda genuine fluid !

I have the same Issue Mate, its your 3rd Gear Syncro.
I was advised to use Redline Lightweight Shockproof Oil. It seems to have greatly Suppressed my Issue but it only masks the problem, you will eventually need to open up the gearbox and change the syncros in the long run

Hey man i got the same problem, its a common issue for 3rd synchro to go on these gearboxs, i changed the gearoil and it still crunched in high revs. JDM yard should have them in stock as i got them from there, not cheap issue try not give the car a hard time or else it hits the pocket and hurts :( lol. goodluck with the repair
