Looking to buy a oil cooler for my b18c7 from just jap. Can somebody recomend me a suitable size core? Is there such a thing as too big? I plan to track the car so it will need to be up to the task. Car is a eg civic also if that makes any difference

9 row should do the job. get a thermostat though so that you never have to worry about the oil being too cold, I quite like this one http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EAR-501ERL/ and not too expensive although by the time you buy fittings it adds up.

I was more hoping to get the just gap style ones (blue), mainly because they come as the complete kit and look sweet. That one you posted looks like a completely different style, which is more efficient?

15 row is sufficient

The thing I posted is a thermostat, you add it to the kit that you get from just jap. When cold it cycles the oil straight back in to the engine so that it gets warm. Once the oil heats up it opens up and cycles oil through the cooler.
You don't need it but I would have one just so you don't have to worry about cold oil when you are not at the track. To solve this problem some people go with a cover that prevents air flowing through the cooler when it is not needed.

The bigger you go, the more pressure drop you will see (bad thing) length and size of the lines also affects this. Can't check the just jap website atm but make sure it has at least -10AN size lines.

I have a Trust 9 row on my turbo integra and I saw a temp difference of up to 50 degrees F, it doesn't go above 200F even in a high load situation like going up the feeway which is 6km steep uphill at 100kmh.
I shortened the lines by a total of 1.2m as well to minimise pressure drop and I only lost about 1-2PSI and it hits full pressure about 300RPM higher than before.

Ok so do you think it would be plausible to run maybe an 11 or 13 row cooler with shortest lines possible without the thermostat? I always let it warm up for ages and never rev it much anyway.

of course it is possible but you must get at least an oil temp gauge so that you know what is going on, to stay on the cheap side do a cover for when you are not at the track. I still think though that for peace of mind get the thermostat and run whatever size cooler you want

Ok thanks heaps for that mate, do you know what standard oil temp should be in my engine? I'll get an 11 row and gauge, monitor the oil temp and if I have issues will get the thermostat. Do you think it's better to measure oil temp at the sandwich plate or at the sump? I'm planning on buying a moroso baffled sump anyway which I understand has a oil temp bung in it

On the street cruising around, oil temp is around 80-90 degrees. Really depends on your driving behavior as it can shoot up quite easily. Best place is to measure the temp in the sump.

Moroso sump it is. Unless somebody can recommend another.

The standard temp gauge on the dash is water temp right? Will that temp drop with an oil cooler too? Should I swap out that thermostat for another spec one?

That would be your water temp.

You don't 'have' to get a moroso sump, you can get one welded in to your existing sump. Appart from that too, you can put the sensor in the sandwhich plate but you must ensure its on the plate 'before' it goes to cooler, as this is the point where its drawn up from the sump and is hottest. You dont want to put the sensor 'after' the cooler as its of course cooled then. It much easier of course to put it in to the sandwhich plate. So depends on what you want to do.

I want a baffled sump anyway and from what i've read moroso is the best. Only $120 posted on ebay with our dollar as it is. Rather have the temp sensor in the best place possible too

Will do. Only problem is I won't have a before reading on oil temp. Plan to install the gauge, cooler, sump and full service at the same time

any info on how your new cooler set up has gone and which oil cooler you went with.?

I'm going with greddy thermostat sandwich plate, nice braided limes and fittings, cooler brand I don't know yet. I can't see why prices can be from 100-1000 for something so simple. I'll probably get a $2-300 core, not sure what brand yet
