In part 1, I covered the meaning of Speaker SPL/Sensitivity/Efficiency and how you can use it, along with the power rating of the speaker to work out if the speaker is loud enough for you and how much power your amplifier needs to deliver.

In part 2, we'll look at how to get more volume from the same speaker, which effectively means we don't need as much power from the amplifier.

Let's look at car doors first. Most of us have our main speakers in the car doors, for two obvious reasons:

It seems to give pretty good sound from there


The speaker that goes there might be coaxial speaker which has a (high frequency) tweeter mounted over the centre of a (low frequency) woofer/midrange. Maybe there is a midrange speaker mounted next to the tweeter. Alternatively you may have a "split system" where the woofer sits in the door and the tweeter is mounted high on the door or somewhere else where it can point at you.

Either way, the speaker in the door is using the door as a sort of echo chamber (not necessarily to your advantage).
