My car is making yucky noise coming from the engine. Supposively its just my tappets out of allignment. Anyone have any DIY ideas? and is it really DIY'able. hint hint JOHN. Also has anyone had this problem before. Does it hurt ur engine? and how much to fix it if not diy?

???

Could be numerous things Sperm man.

Do you need an oil change ? Change your oil with a fresh few litres of honda FEO , and a nice new oil filter. That should tighten the heads movement up alittle...
Next you might need a valve lash adjustment - or the harmonics of a certain engine part might be slightly off, giving a humm or buzz at certain rpms.
Give us more info mate !

mine has a tapping noise and we rang honda and due to the shape of the pistons, an oval shape when cold and then goto the round shape once warm...they can solidify in the oval shape and cause the ticking noise

Well i was talkin to Win about this and he doesnt think its valve slash. Soon as u turn on ur car on (IDLE) you can hear tapping noise i guess you would call it. After warming up it kinda goes away. Umzzz. oil change was less then 5k ago, oil filter under 10 ks ago.

ok ok,

its really not that hard but if you get it wrong you will be sorry in the long run. there is nothing worse than a tight valve.

I got some tappets to do on an EM1 next weekend so ill do a DIY for you. BUT its a major do this at your own risk if your a nube to mechanical type of work.

Thanks John. Well it'l be beneficial for the forum anyway. If its a heavy load i'l just take to my mechanic.

It might be your injectors... they're known to make tapping noises also.

Not if the noise goes away once the car is warm :)

funny this thread about tappets came up

i had mine done today, as well as the other stuff for the 80K service
by the one and only DR HONDA (sydney guys only, sorry!)

and yes, it is a major job, not really DIY unless you really know what you are doing

i think doing tappets are a case of actually seeing someone do them in front of you, then you have a good idea of what needs to be done. They arent hard to do once you have seen it done and had it explained to you

how much does it cost to get this done?

ECU-MAN

depends on the hourly rate of the mechanic. and any mechanic with Honda know how can adjust tappest. Honda tappets arnt any different but they do have a few tricks.

When I was over at Weq's we adjust the valve lash and I leant a thing or two ;)

You follow these at your OWN risk and neither myself or Ozhonda take responsibility for the outcome! In a nutshell this is what you do (DIY later thanks to John! hehe)

- Remove rocker cover
- Bring piston 1 to TDC (UP marks on cam pulley point up and lines on cam pully line up with line with timing belt cover AND/OR white line on crank pulley lines up with pointer on lower timing belt cover)

*- Loosen the locknut and turn the adjusting screw till the feeler gauge (which you insert between the base of the valve and the rocker arm) moves back and forth with a bit of drag.
- Do up the adjusting screw and double check the clearance with the feeler gauge
- Rotate the crank 180 degrees counterclockwise (cam pulley 90 degrees) to bring piston 3 to TDC
- Repeat *
- Rotate the crank 180 degrees counterclockwise (cam pulley 90 degrees) to bring piston 4 to TDC
- Repeat *
- Rotate the crank 180 degrees counterclockwise (cam pulley 90 degrees) to bring piston 2 to TDC

:)

That's it roughly.............everything right John/Weq?

Yep, BUT DO THIS WITH A STONE COLD ENGINE, dont do it if your engine is even warm.

most honda you put the feeler gauge at the valve but some need to get adjusted at the camshaft.

let me know you car type Tien and Ill hook you up with some info

Vtir get done at the cam shaft, you also need a special tool :(, I have made my own special tool, you can do it with out but its a pain in the ass, coz the nut is so far down the head.

Buy a welder and make your own.

Welding/fabrication section of honda-tech rocks.

yeah DIY is fun, but I get too scared :P and pissed off, so i dont bother. Cant be arsed trouble-shooting anymore, let someone else do it :P

I got it done at tecknik tuning (AKA - ART)... cost $140 including timing readjust. Not a bad price really. Also Razz Tech can do it as well, thats who i intended on going through but he has been a bit busy and i needed it done ASAP.
