Hey guys,

Posted a thread a while back trying to source a new motor for my EG hatch which recently threw a rod... It seems the best match I could find was a JDM D15B with about 40,xxxkm's from a local honda wrecker. (Given the d16y1 is proving to be very hard to find!)

Anyway I am told the motors are very similar so a straight up swap shouldn't be a problem.
I am really just looking to confirm this... If anyone has done this swap or similar to it would be great if I could get some insight into things before we start

Car is running a Hondata S300 ecu and has a Turbo set up on it atm which I do intend to transfer over to the new motor.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ben

they are very similar - the intake manifold on the D16y1 is slightly better - so i would be keeping this
also the gearbox on the D15 is slightly better - so i would be keeping that as well

dont let the 0.1 of a ltr fool you - those vtec D15B's go like the clappers

As per TheSaint. Sounds like a good project mate and I'd like to see how it feels with the D15 gear ratios being a little shorter. I don't think it'll feel any slower than the Y1.

Can I ask, what PSI were you running when you threw the rod? I hear the stockies are good for about 10 and I remember seeing a member here throw a rod doing like 11 or 12 on his Y1.

the turbo was running off the waste gate spring (8.7psi) when it threw the rod however I believe it was a number of things that led to that conclusion and not the boost itself;

- There had been wastegate issues prior to the new gate being fitted and the car was overboosted to 15+ psi
- Oil was quite old and required changing
- Rev limit was set where Im told was too high (7.5k I believe from memory)
- It was the original motor (220xxx+ km's)

Im considering getting a smaller spring and running it at say 5 or so psi just for safety/reliability for a while with the new setup.

my D15b7 (no vtec) goes to 7k rpm easy - so i doubt it was a rev limit issue

any chance i can buy your D16y1 head?

Yeah pretty sure Y1 redline is 7200? Fuel cut 7400? Should have no issues going to 7500 then.

What kind of power were you making on 8.7PSI? I've always wondered what it would be like to boost my Y1 daily driver :D

Not sure since it was a slightly bigger turbo than when it was last tuned... Last owner was given an estimate of around 180bhp by Cypher with the .50 trim.
