Sup Guys..
Looking at getting my first car soon  But I'm a little stumped..
I've pretty much narrowed it down to a Vti-r Teggy, a vti-r ek civic, or a del sol.
Opinions? Suggestions for any other car? Preferable Dohc with vtec... But will consider none the less. Price limit about 6-7.

They're all good options IMO, it really depends on what looks best to you or what you LIKE the most. Their performance will probably be very similar in terms of handling and power.
I think the DC2 looks the best, followed by the EK4 (although I would prefer an EG6 to an EK4). EG2 has never really interested me as far as CRX's are concerned - I would prefer an EF8 (and I own one booya!).

Man you're not gonna get a decent vti-r for 6-7k. It's gonna be thrashed, high km or repairable write-off or something.
But out of the 3, vti-r teggy! biased of course :P
Yup what dougie sed, depends on what you like the most. DC2 would me abit more roomier than the ek and crx so that would be easier if you got passengers etc imo. All 3 cars have fairly good aftermarket support so lots to choose from if your planning to mod it. If it was me i would choose the ek4, for some reason they look hot lol what about a bb6 prelude vti-r? There should be some within your price range.

Yeah not really worried about passengers, i ain't no taxi ;) But yeah, I like the ek4 the best, but would need one with b16a from factory... as can't do engine swaps :/ Not really a fan of the prelude. I don't know why, they just haven't really appealed to me :3

But I'd be mainly worrying about looking better ;)
I'd go teg but the again bias.. I got a type R .. Actually even look int an EM1 I really like those lil things .. If modded right they look awesome..

He won't get an EM1 for $6-7k. He's going to struggle to get a DC2 or EK4. Del Sol you can get for that price range if you look hard enough.
Hahahaha Just thinking about somthing with a good engine from factory, as i will be on p's... Otherwise i would engine swap an eg5 :P
The cars you have selected are all good options. IMO don't buy an EG5 and engine swap it. You'll spend much more than $6-7k total. Just start with somebody that already has a good potential, or look for a clean car that's already been legitimately and legally engine-swapped.
EK has the most room, followed by DC, then Del Sol.

I might even end up getting more than 6-7k thats just what i have now :3 Really keen on getting a del sol lately, but there isn't much available. And can't get one that is engine swapped, as i can't have a mod plate, because will be on my p's, and that shit is illegal D: know anyone who wants to get rid of a del sol in qld for like 7k? ;)

1+ for DelSol - Its got a targa top for summer, zippy with the b16a good gearbox good fuel economy, quite rare and uncommon (most people always ask what car i have )
1+ for DC2 - Its got a nice B18C so easily modified to go quick, great aftermarket and parts support (can use parts from dc2r etc),

Type R would be great as a first car!! I know everyone thinks that a p-plater with a powerful car = try to be a hero, but i wouldn't try and be some maddog in an xr6 there daddy bought them ^_^

Loooool an R isnt that powerful compared to what some P platers are driving these days...
Indie
12-06-2011, 12:20 AM
Yeah, a Type R isn't powerful, but that doesn't stop kids from thinking they're race drivers and under-steering into a tree. This can happen in any car, sure, but it's more likely to happen if someone is driving a supposedly fast car. An XR6 is also a dangerous proposition. Kids should be made to drive something more sedate.
That issue aside, you're more likely to write your first car off than any other, and it's better to wreck something other than a poor Type R. I see girls with rich parents driving their new Audi TTs, and I wonder how long that car will last before its third low-speed collision.

I you get De sol or Teg +P plate. You'll get raped by insurance, pulled over by cops every 1/4 mile and crash when the vtec kicks in. Youll suffer the same on civvies but at least cheaper to insure...

Lol thats funny cos one of my best friends is driving her dads audi turbo. im pretty sure she cant even legally drive it but they only got one car in the family. Type R is a sick car. Not just for power, but for handling. Best FWD handling car going around back in the 90's and it would give all modern FWD's a run for their money.
Not a good option for first car IMO. You'll damage it. Everybody crashes eventually. Better off crashing an EK or an EG - something easily fixed.
Type R's (and Integras generally) also cost more to insure comprehensively (if you can get insurance on it at all). They carry a 'vehicle excess' extra of about $500 due to the amount of idiots that crash them.

To be honest, a first car should be something fairly slow and cheap so that you can "learn" how to drive..
my opinion get a EG/EK, drive around for awhile, then buy a b16/b18 and drop it in.
DC2R wouldnt be that bad as a first car imo. Its not powerful and a stock one is fairly easy to drive. As long as you drive responsibly, i wouldn't worry too much about getting pulled over etc. Insurance might be abit high for p platers tho but if you like an r and the funds isnt restricting you, i say why not? :P

Why will i get pulled up every 1/4 mile? Cops up here are downers, the only thing that matters to them is more cylinders, they would see someone in a modded teg and just go back to RBT'ing the 400000 falcadores up here >.<

i did and have never looked back...
why buy something shit and waste your time with it when you know your going to get one eventually anyway....
ps i bought my type R myself (no help from mummy and daddy) when i was on myy red P's a the only times i have been pulled over by the cops is when i was doing something dumb which is like twice in the past 3 years.. so i wouldnt worry about getting pulled over too much.

True, not everybody has a crash , I mean they would not give you your p's if they think your going to crash in the first place. If you can afford a type-r get it , it's a great car with a decent package from factory. Why waste your money on a civic which your not going to engine swap and probably waste money on mods.

Everybody has a crash sooner or later. It's just a matter of time.
I did 123 hours of legitimate practise and still managed to crash. The crash wasn't entirely my fault (circumstancial) but it was deemed my fault and my car still got written off.
So do what I did. Drive a cheap and affordable care (I had an '86 Corolla carby sedan) and later bought a '94 Civic Sedan VTi and also a JDM CRX SiR for a weekend car now that I'm older, earning more money, and a better driver.
You WILL crash eventually.

just get the del slow, learn to drive and upgrade to something better. on your P's you'll probably have a ding here or there and it's much cheaper to fix a EG or EK like previously mentioned.
also i wouldn't be dailying a Type R. thieves love to debadge them or if they know what they're doing, take the whole car, joy ride, crash and then steal your seats which is usually enough to write off the car.
i'd be leaving my R safely at home while i daily in something much much slower.

All of the older members agree that it's better to start on a slower, cheaper car.
You may really want a faster car now, but when you want to move out or travel, it just might happen that you wish you weren't paying for insurance/fuel/expensive servicing/repairs/sports tyres/replacing stolen seats...
You come to love your first car no matter what it is.

I think it's kind of ignorant to say someone will crash no matter what The people I know when I and them were fresh red platers never had a crash except for one guy but an old lady ran a red and smashed into him so not his fault.
Just get what ever car you like if your confident that your a good driver, otherwise get a sh1tbox like most said.

Same here. My first car cost 600 bucks. LPG powered Sigma love wagon ooo yea. Saved me lots of money and 3 accidents (2 at faults) later I learnt to slow the **** down. Never needed repairing since it was such a tank. Passed it on for $450 and looking back best purchase ever.
Money you save not repairing or doing stupid mods on your 1st car will go towards a nice 2nd or even 3rd car.

Not true.
A friend of mine did the whole "buy a shitbox for your first car" thing, bought an early 90's corolla and hates every second of it. He even got excited when he thought it was stolen. He's now looking to sell it and buy a civic.
Also engine swaps are legal for P platers as long as the engine was offered from the factory. e.g swapping out a CA18DE for SR20DE in 180SX or D16Y4 for B16A2 in an EK - however with the engine swap all other parts need to be fitted with it too (rear disc brakes with the upgrade to B16A2 etc). Mod plates with engine modification codes is what we're not allowed. Which means a mod plate for say a bucket seat is actually allowed.
For all these people saying "YOU WILL CRASH" - don't let them dictate you on what to buy - crashes happen yeah, but just driving style has a shit load more to do with it than with what car. I'm a p plater and the only crash I've had wasn't my fault but an open licensee's fault - and nowadays L platers/P platers generally know more about road rules than most people on their opens.
Buy something cheap, and reliable - I'd go with the EK4 as it's newer than the del sol and it'll be cheaper to buy/run/insure than the teg.

5K is awfully cheap yo. Seriously, a car is something you don't want to cheap out on. If you choose to go the cheap way and buy a car that's in pretty poor condition because simply for its low price you're asking for trouble. Also you can learn a lot about a car and its owner by the way the ad has been written. Dude selling the car sounds like an idiot... Personally I wouldn't waste my time, especially with the amount of K's on it.
Realistically, save a bit more money or get a Civic or CRX. Or you could get a GSI and eventually build a B20 Vtec or turbo if you're interested.

I just got myself a Del Sol after owning an EG5. Best decision ever!
5 seats are overrated.

Price limit about 6-7.
i asked myself the same question afew months ago too! same shoes as you. had 7k and wanted a dohc vtec. i narrowed it down and for 6-7 you wont get a decent teggy, either thrashed or high km or rolled back km etc. del sol 2 seats was inconvenient for me so i ended up getting a ek4. i love the thing, i wouldn't mind the extra bit of torque from the teggy but cant complain for 6k.

Hahahaha yeah i know the 5k teg was shit, but it was cheap and in qld, and as long as the engine was ok, would be good.

In that case, definitely have someone competent take a look at it or just RACQ mastercheck it for about $200-300, tells you basically everything you need to know mechanically wise.

Umm.. There's http://brisbane.gumtree.com.au/
http://www.tradingpost.com.au/
http://www.boostcruising.com/
But obviously the condition of cars on here should be better than other sites
Just quickly looked then and found this: http://brisbane.gumtree.com.au/c-Cars-Vehicles-Motorbikes-Parts-cars-Honda-Integra-W0QQAdIdZ287067544
Seems pretty good. Female owner, just under 200000kms, 5k, looks stock.

You're biting off more than you can chew. You can't afford any of these cars on your current budget. Spend more, or ditch VTEC.

OP seems patient enough (shown through him taking the time to decide which car he actually wants) to save up instead of rushing into it or buying a messed up car which he'll have to spend more overall to fix

Better a Ford than a Holden. They're better cars, consistently proven. Just shows you what plain ignorance and band-wagon mob mentality can do to a domestic market...
