Recently got a EPA noise letter . changed the j's racing 70rs to stock n still failed
Had a reading of 92 dp.
Everything is back to stock apart from headers.
Got told headers don't make a difference..
Wtf do I do???

Hmm, might need to stuff some cotton wool in your CAT for the test.

far out. that's epic, I've been using 70RS for 2 months, and no cops have pulled me over. And I've got an intake too :S
although, the 70RS come with silencers, did you try them?

You might want to call honda and ask how loud the car is stock. I remember reading somewhere a LONG time ago that the car stock actually is too loud, but still was allowed to be sold due to a loophole. Look it up....or as aus said, stuff your cat, with steel wool though, not cotton wool.

Just did a quick search and stock the db reading is 91.5Db, which is in excess of the legal limit but I think in 1999 db limits didn't apply and hence it got through.

an aftermarket header does increase the sound dude, change it back to stock, and while your at it shove your stock filter back on but the header is what's making the noise.

Ain't got the stock headers. steel wool it is !!!

krogoth
15-06-2011, 09:31 AM
make sure you put the steel wool before the cat, or it will it eventually fly out lmao

LEWD
15-06-2011, 10:52 AM
oh and dont drive too long with the steel wool in there, eventually it will start to burn as the cat get quite hot and the tester will know whats up as you he'll be able to smell it.

lol steel wool, just borrow a stock header
or get an exhaust shop to fab up a flange with like a 1" opening and jam it between the exhaust and cat

That would be an interesting experience when the tester is revving the engine at 6250rpm for the test!

Even with a stock header the car would fail as a brand new stock s2000 exceeds the noise limit, therefore it is a pointless exercise. Unless the OP gets written confirmation from Honda as to this fact so he can show to the tester that the car is no louder than stock and therefore required to the pass the car, his only other option is to stuff he steel wool down his trousers....erm, exhaust.

Tried the steel wool still failed ..
It's all engine noise.
Anygot a stock header ??

LEWD

Engine noise shouldnt be that loud as the test is about 1m from the rear of the car...if their test equipment is picking up engine noise from that distance with a closed bonnet then there is something wrong with your engine.

Im surprised steel wool didnt do the trick, i dropped my old prelude's reading 4db using steel wool. Did you use quite a bit of it and stuff it in there?

Actually another thing, what RPM are they testing it at?

Ive got the Varex muffler system, and if you are caught driving with the flange open, and it fails the test, you will get fined as though it is a normal non-flanged muffler. That Apexi Flange will probably be harder for the cops to find though..

wouldnt the varex damage the s2000 as air cant escape fast enough when its closed?

I dont believe so. When the butterfly valve closes, the aim isnt to air seal the muffler.. its has a bypass where the exhaust gas travels up and down the muffler length a couple of times, like your stock muffler, and then passes out through the end of the muffler..

i understand how it works. i have a varex muffler on my impreza and when its closed it feels much more restricted then stock and xforce even say its quieter then stock which means its more restricted. i just thought as the s2000 is tuned so high that a varex muffler when closed, would be to restrictive for an s2000 and damage it. Also when i was at xforce getting the varex put on the impreza they said not to put one one the s2000 as they weren't designed for it and can damage it.

It might be restricted but i dont think more then stock. It definantly isnt quieter then stock when its closed.

are you running a single muffler or do u have dual varex mufflers?

Its quite expensive. Liverpool Exhaust is owned by my uncle, so i get them done relatively cheap. Theres a video on YouTube of when i first got them, sorta breaking them in. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-Kzh_mqnCY Hadnt driven the car for a couple weeks prior to that, hence the smoke.

I'd be interested to hear them with the Varex valve closed.

I saw the ad for these mufflers in a recent Top Gear mag and thought it was quite a good idea.

Oh, and clean up that garage. It's starting to look like mine!

Yea, they come with a heavy price tag. But to be honest i hardly ever close the valve. Only if i come home one day and dont wanna wake the family up, and if i just dont want any attention.
