My b16a2 is stock as a rock, it doesn't really "hit" vtec, it's more like a smooth transition into it, you can barely notice the crossover.
I see some of them on youtube where the vtec crossover is really prominent.
Are there particular mods that change the crossover, or?

you prob have the stock airbox and stock exhaust and such....
i know that my mates was pretty quiet couldnt really hear the kick that well untill he changes his stock airbox to a short ram with exposed pod....
aftermarket air intake, will make a huge difference with sound

Exactly. From the factory, they ar designed to be quiet as possible without restricting too much power.

Pod filter = noise.

from the sounds of it you just need to get yourself an intake kit
also the newer/tighter and better the tune on the engine the less you will notice the crossover - it may not sound as good but its better for performance to have a smooth crossover

Smoother cross over = better performance. Honda designed it that way, thats the whole point of vtec, so u get the best of both down low and top end performance. Most cars only have one cam lobe profile, so they must have a compromise between low end or top end power, but with vtec it allows you to effectivly have two different cam profiles. By changing ur ehaust and to a short ram intake u will notice a louder cross over and even more so if you change the cross over point to a lower rpm, which is pointless unless uve been doing some extensive tuning with the head etc

Why do people care about how loud their crossover is?. After getting a tune I loved the extra midrange power...:)
Especially in 2nd gear. It gets me out of corners faster...

People care because it's like a penis-complex. They think that if they have a massively loud crossover they're cooler and more hardcore etc. So they try to make it louder and pretty much ignore the actual driveability of their car.
Notice the amount people with B18C2's doing this because they wanted a relatively cheap car with a VTEC B-series, so they buy a DC2 VTiR then have a whinge about how quiet the VTEC is without realising it was designed to be that way to optimise the torque-curve for daily driving. Then they make a silly thread asking people how they can make their crossover louder.
Personally I enjoyed having a smooth crossover when I got my EF8 CRX but since I've done the head-build it's become mega-f*ucking-loud. Sometimes I find it funny if VTEC engages next to somebody and they get a little surprise but most of the time I find it just a little bit annoying - gets too much attention and is bound to attract the wrong type eventually.

Yep I kinda agree how the loud the crossover is on my B18C2 transplant with an SRI and skunk2 intake manifold, it makes me feel embarrassed when trashing it actually. Am I getting old? :P

When driving with my window down and I hit VTEC - its too loud and it irritates the hell out of me - after a while you get sick and tired of it - i tend to drive with my windows up just to avoid hearing the roar-ness of the crossover - (No your no getting old) - it just gets annoying after a while
