Another Japanese team out testing at Fuji Speedway last week was Suzuki-san and the Scorch Racing S15. This car is another that has undergone quite an extensive rebuild prior to coming down under for the World Time Attack Challenge (http://www.advanwheels.com.au/racing/event.aspx?id=5).
The big difference with Suzuki-san is that he isnt really a team at all! He is just a guy that works at a job five days a week and his mates at Scorch Racing give him a hand and let him use their workshop to develop what is almost without question the worlds fastest time attack Silvia. Unfortunately the Holinger transmission gave them some trouble before they could record any full laptimes they reported that the engine “felt extremely strong” and they towed the car back to the Scorch shop to inspect the gearbox which they assure us is an easy repair.

And it was the engine the guys really wanted to shakedown as that is where the big changes have been made since they destroyed their last engine at Tsukuba earlier this year after setting a low 55 second time.
The 2.2 litre engine is now sporting a big GCG turbocharger with Turbosmart Comp-Gate 40 and a dry sump kit supplied by Hi Octane Racing in Australia after it was revealed that oil surge was the reason the last engine let go. They are certainly confident that this engine is “considerably” more powerful than the last one. Like everything else on this car it is built by Suzuki-san.

The cylinder head is now a heavily ported BIG VALVE version of the VE by Japanese cylinder head gurus NAPREC who have jumped on board to help Suzuki-san with his big trip down under.
As Suzuki-san has had to work throughout the day most of this work has been carried out long into the evenings or on weekends which would ring a bell with many a car enthusiast, and this would not normally be a problem except for the time constraits to make it in time for WTAC meaning there was many a late night.

Once the engine was back in the car there was still quite a bit of work to do. To look at from the front the car certainly looks more like a Super GT car than a modified road car but I can tell you that this car has just been developed year upon year to go faster and faster and in turn parts have been made lighter and lighter and as things have broken they have been replaced with stronger items.

And because of the amount of carbon fibre work required to acheive what he wanted to acheive, Suzuki-san has also taught himself the art of composite manufacture and the quality of his work defies belief. Check it out for yourself!

And as the WTAC rules require a full length dash, Suzuki-san whipped up this beautiful carbon version that weighs about the same as the two pieces of paper stuck to it!

So it looks like all that is left to do now is pack all the spares into the boxes, head for the docks and load up the container marked “TO SYDNEY”. I really wonder if these guys have any idea how popular this car is going to be in Australia as it ticks an awful lot of boxes. To start with its a Silvia and the Silvia community is huge in Australia, secondly there is no question Suzuki-san is the underdog.
It is a car built by himself and driven by himself, and lastly and most importantly… there is every damn chance this car could win OUTRIGHT!
