With Team New Zealand comprising of the Team RevolutioNZ Evo 8 coming to compete in the Advan Pro Class, and six of the very best drifters from D1 New Zealand set to battle the Aussies in the Tectaloy Drift Challenge it is clear the Kiwis are taking this VERY seriously.
Most teams have been kept extremely busy with several top teams embarking on full rebuilds prior to loading up and heading across the Tasman. Whilst many of the drift guys have competed overseas before with Mad Mike competing in Formula D USA last year, Fanga Dan and Daynom running Formula D in Asia, and Mike and Gaz competing in the USA in 2008, it is interesting to note that NONE of them have ever competed on Australian soil before.
For others such as Cole Armstrong and Curt Whittaker this will be their first overseas foray which will no doubt be exciting for them. Same with team RevolutioNZ. They have certainly beat all comers in the NZ Superlap but havent raced overseas before. This is certainly not the case for their driver Jono Lester though, who has raced Porsche Carrera Cup cars throughout Europe. The other big “name” that will be coming across the Tasman is the Kiwi open wheel legend and A1GP driver, Earl Bamber, who has been contracted by a “yet to be announced” Australian Pro team for wheel duties.

The RevolutioNZ Evo has undergone an extensive rebuild for the WTAC.

Firstly the Team Revolutionz Evo of Scott Kreyl has had under a complete overhaul for the event. These guys realised early in the piece that to compete against the worlds fastest they would need to come with similar equipment and the car was stripped to a shell. The brief given was “If it doesnt need to be there, get rid of it and if it does need to be there then make it lighter” and hence the car has shed an awful lot of weight.
They have also fitted a straight cut Albins dog engagement gearbox and having the HKS CT230R sitting at their sponsors Redline Performance showroom, has also proved to be an extremely valuable resource for ideas. After all if you are going to try to build the fastest time attack Lancer Evo it makes sense to model it of the one that is already the fastest! This Kiwi car reportedly has a stack of power and will certainly be worth keeping an eye on in August, that is for sure.

Team RevolutioNZ have also been on a serious weight reduction campaign.

Gaz Whiter is another that has tackled a full rebuild of his widebody S14. With his third consecutive D1NZ championship under his belt this father and son team wasted no time stripping the car to a bare shell and once again weight reduction was one of the big areas that was addressed. The car has also been re wired and repainted and everything that needed refreshing getting the treatment.

The Tectaloy S14 has also undergone an extensive rebuild for WTAC.

These guys have had a bad run with reliability this year but they still managed to clench the D1NZchampionship for the third time, and now believe they have found the “problem” and are expecting a very big showing in Sydney. You can bet they will be out to impress too, with the event sponsor TECTALOY also being the major sponsor for Gaz Whiter drift team, they will no doubt be pulling out all stops for the win.

Cole Armstrong is another that has stripped his car bare for a full overhaul after a punishing year competing in the D1 New Zealand Championship. This car is a real hit with the NZ Skyline fans and no doubt will have similar effect in Australia. As well as freshening all the suspension this team will be fitting a fresh dry sump RB30 that should enable them to run a higher power output without sacrificing reliability at the large sweeping Eastern Creek circuit.

After a couple of seasons of D1NZ the “V” Energy Skyline of Cole Armstrong copped a full overhaul.

Mad Mike Whiddett has also announced he will be unveiling an all new colour sheme on his Red Bull/Need for Speed RX7 at World Time Attack. The car appeared at the last round of D1 NZ with a fresh engine that has bigger peripheral ports and a new induction system that pushes through the bonnet and now makes very close to 600rwhp. We are told the car will be fully rewired and the sequential gearbox that has been missing for the last few rounds will also be back in the car. This is one car that is “not to be missed” and we cant wait to see the new colour scheme from the “King of what looks sick!”

Daynom Templeman has also revealed a new colour scheme with yellow now covering much of the white duco in keeping with his sponsor Bardahls logo. It certainly looks smart and this is another extremely well prepared Kiwi team with many years of motorsport experience that they will no doubt use to their advantage.

This only leaves Fanga Dan and Curt Whittaker, and as both of these guys are running fairly “fresh” cars there preparations will be less intensive. But that is certainly not to discount either of these guys as both certainly have both the talent and the machinery to hand it to all comers. Curts 2JZ powered R34 was only finished before this years D1 season and came within a few points of standing on the top step of the podium and Fanga Dan seems extremely comfortable in the Commodore and there is no doubt the larger Eastern Creek circuit may well suit the big torquey six litre engine. Only time will tell but whatever the case we can’t wait to find out!!!
