Legendary Japanese rotary tuning house Panspeed have confirmed they will be returning to Australia to compete in the 2011 World time Attack Challenge. This car finished fifth outright and ran in the low 1.32 second range last year despite many setbacks throughout the 2010 event. The car has undergone another year of testing and this team now bring with them the knowledge of the Eastern Creek circuit something that could prove invaluable when they take on their arch rivals Garage Revolution in a rotary showdown like no other.

The Panspeed RX7 has amongst other things is now running a much stronger Holinger gearbox and has also had a power up in the past twelve months.GCG have also been working closely with this team to perfect the turbo combination and it appears by all accounts that they are very happy with the performance of the car of late and hence the decision was made to return to Australia and see if they can improve on last years performance. Once again driving for the team will be Japanese Super GT driver Kouta Sasaki.

“We are absolutely ecstatic about Panspeed returning to Australia” said Superlap CEO Ian Baker “Our country has a rotary following like no other and this car was an absolute crowd favourite last year, we don’t expect this year to be any different.”
“In many ways this team really encompasses what the spirit of time attack racing is all about too. They are a family owned workshop in Saitama Japan that has built a car and raced and developed it over many years all the time getting faster and faster. The other thing that really needs to be remembered is that this team set their fastest time at Eastern Creek late in the afternoon last year when the track is traditionally at its slowest giving a fair indication that we have not yet seen the best that these guys have got.”

The Panspeed team are coy about actual testing results but there is no doubt they have gone faster than ever before and this car has lapped Tsukuba in 55 seconds in the past. In many ways though Tsukuba is not always a good indicator of what a car will do at Eastern Creek. The two tracks are worlds apart with the long flowing Mt Fuji track actually sharing more in common with Eastern Creek than the tight, technical Tsukuba circuit. The other big difference is temperature, with many of the Japanese events run in the Japanese winter which sees near freezing conditions requiring a totally different tyre selection to what would be required in Australia.

On the topic of tyres the other interesting thing with Panspeed is their close relationship with Dunlop bringing a third top level tyre manufacturer to the fore with most other Pro Class entries opting for either a Yokohama A050 or the Hankook Ventus TD Z221 tyre. The Panspeed RX7 will run on soft Dunlop 03G tyres.
We can’t wait to have these guys back!!!
