View Full Version : Able to change from a gear to neutral without the clutch..... Normal? (DC5R)
Hey all,
Noticed this the other day. While im driving along, say in 2nd gear at like 2500rpm for example, i can push the gear stick from 2nd into neutral without needing to press the clutch... I havent tried it in every gear yet. Is this normal? Or have i got issues?
Got me a bit worried... Any help would be great. Cheers.

It is possible when the engine is not under load (i.e. neither accelerating nor engine-braking)
Righto cool so nothing to worry about then?

As long as its not falling/popping out of gear, then you have nothing to worry about. My bro's dc5s does the same thing. Even from 1st to 2nd under load (8,000rpm) when the clutch pedal is depressed the gear lever seems to pop out of 1st and into second with minimal effort from driver. (pretty handy really)

Clutchless shifting is no problem unless you're doing it wrong and grinding it, or as others have stated it, the stick popping out of gears..
so no, nothing to worry about :)

dont want to sound like a noob, but how do you do this? ive never attempted to change gear without clutch fearing i would grind it.
didnt believe my friend when he told me. but when he shifted from 3rd to 4th without the clutch. i was like wtf, your gearbox is mad. :L

are you guys talking about what the OP said "clutchless from 2nd gear to neutral" or "clutchless from gear-to-gear"......a gear to neutral is nothing new, as far as i know and driven manual cars made as far back as 70s can do that. I wouldnt say its normal to do that if it becomes a habit, ideally you have to press the clutch.

when I was first learning I used to grind quiet alot, though I was truely amazed when I changed the MTF.. The fluid was dirty yes, but did not have metal shavings or anything like that.. Just shows the quality of a Honda
