Just wondering if these last longer than their acid based cousins?

So long as you take care of them, they do. Optimas have a shelf life of 4-8 years over the 2-5 of lead acid batteries.

What's involved with the 'extra care'? :)

THings like not continuous draining of the battery dead (as in hundreds and hundreds of times), spiking it on un-regulated chargers, leaving them in damp places for months and months etc. You should drain every gell-cell battery every twelve months full and slowly trickle charge it back to full again.

[zeth] , you should have got that replaced under warrantly if it was fitted by a shop dude. I've done over 500 Optima's over the years and I haven't had one last less than 4 years yet. Mind you, we get customers back after twelve months to drain and charge them again.

How much does it cost to drain and have it recharged (rough figure is fine) ?

Nothing.

I figure if you're going to spend a couple of hundred dollars with us on a battery the least we can do in return is not charge you for something so trivial. ;)

So thats for the life of the battery.......and includes the trickle charge? How long does the trickle charge take?
