its not rim size its overall diameter increase of rims and tyres but cant remember the measurement
best thing is just ask your insurance company

The general rule of thumb is 2" but the technical measurment I cant remember, pnadaCRX said ask your security company or ring your local transport office.

I'm quiet sure it's 2", however, I've never heard of any people having problems with defects because they have gone up another inch or two.

That is correct. The GLi came with 14" hubcaps and the VTiR came with 15" alloys...exactly the same bodyshell, yet just because the tyre placard states stock size, it is deemed illegal for the GLi to go larger than 16" to remain legal, yet if you had a VTiR you could probably go to 17" and remain legal...even though they have the same bodyshell. It's stupid.

in most cases, you can have 18" (7.5" wide) engineered.;)
check with the insurance and an engineer.

Just pimp it up mate. I know a guy with 19's on his baby. Just go for what ever you fancy. But i reckon go 17's and just drop it. I've got 18's, but i wished i got 17's cause you can drop it more.

If you're in NSW then the RTA regulation states the following:
"Wheels up to 26mm wider than the largest optional wheel recommended by the vehicle manufacturer for the vehicle can be fitted without the need to notify the RTA.
The outside diameter of the wheel and tyre combination must be no more than 15mm over the largest diameter wheel and tyre combination specified for the vehicle and not more than 15mm below the smallest diameter wheel and tyre combination specified for the vehicle"
This is taken straight out of the RTA guidelines. You can check it out here:

Nah man, dont settle for 15s, go 12s. Less steel = less weight = your car will be around 5 seconds quicker over the quarter-mile. While you are there, you should strip off any other cosmetic things on your car that might detract from the all-important trap-speed, such as doors, fenders, bonnet.
Bleh, or you could just get what looks good to you and be happy. As mentioned on the other posts, the RTA doesnt specify any rim diameter limits - just a width limit. As long as you lower the profile of your tyres to match...

If anyone paid attention and read that RTA extract properly... you'd realise, as "dominik" pointed out, that there only restrictions on overal tyre diameter, not rim diameter, so you can go as big as you want providing the tyre diameter doesn't change more than +- 15mm.
You're restricted to 1 inch WIDER than the LARGEST wheel OFFERED on the car...
Its the "largest optional wheel recommended by the vehicle manufacturer for the vehicle" The largest optional wheel is not necisarily the wheels you have. Find out from honda what they are then you can go 1 inch wider then that!

if you get 12's the car will scrape on the ground - that just wouldn't be practical... plus you will have trouble finding tyres to match... plus the load rating on the tyres will make your car illegal...
thanks for the info guys
the civic is my mates car, if it was up to me i keep the 17s, but because he wants to stay in the legal limit, for insurance reasons hes gonna have to settle for smaller size wheel and tyres.
btw anyone here in sydneys west wanting a swap, i m not familiar with pricing for 16s and 17s so just pm me if anyone is interested. wheels are in ex. cond.
cheers

185/75R12 has the same rolling diameter as 185/60R14s... Think about it.
Having said that, on a small car i actually like 15"s... 15x8 rims with a positive offset and massive lip. Stretch some 165/50R15 rubber on it and dial in about 15 degrees of negative camber. Slam car as necessary for instant Kei-VIP style...

Why will he have to give them up??? unless they're wider than 6.5inch(assuming honda only released them in 5.5) he has no reason too. In NSW you're pretty much only restricted by width... 17s should be fine!

use that as a guide if you are going to get engineers certificate.

Well, if you were truly performance oriented, then the 12s wouldnt seem so bad! You'd need drum brakes, but still... Its all about saving weight isnt it?
I have my personal tastes, but i dont try to shove them down everyone's throats like alot of people here. Let them do what they want - if you dont like it, then dont compliment them, but dont tell them they suck for choosing looks over performance...
