Hey guys,
I’m trying to fit a new rear main seal on my civic. How far in does the seal suppose to go? Should the fly wheel be touching it? How do I put it in probably? Do I need any special tools? I’m just not sure how the seal works; does it spin with the fly wheel?

Thank guys, any help is much appreciated.

Hi John

youe seal is not ment to spin with they flywheel, and its not ment to touch it either. yes honda do have a special tool to insert the new one but it can be done without it, when removing your old seal be 200% sure you dont scratch your crank shaft. the new one goes in as about 2 to 3 mm further than the sump/block. look at the old one as a refference.

you can use the old one to tap in the new one, make sure you lube the new seal with oil before fitting it, mainly the inside of the seal ( the part that seals against the crank). be carefull not to damage the seal.

good luck

i recently replaced my main rear seal with ease (during a gearbox change) -*FIRST measure the depth of the old seal before remving - remeber this depth with either your finger or a something else* then shimmythe old seal with a very thin bladed flathead screwdriver / chiseal ...VERY slowly and with holding the driver very firm - it will pop out basically.

Then , carefully place the new seal (* should come with lubricant outt of the honda packet - ready to install ) and then place the old seal on top - and simply lightly tap corners of the cylindrical seal in - going from one side to the other all the way around to achieve a flush seal. BE CAREFUL and take it sloooow.

Its not too hard once you have the flywheel off....just put it in the same way as your old seal :)

Here's what it should look like (old seal)

bump for an old thread because i'm about to change this seal

is this seal on the tranny or on the block behind the flywheel?

on the end of the crank behind the flywheel. i recommend replacing the bolts for your flywheel too at the same time.

cheers
