we battled with a D16y1/D16z6 crank bolt for like an hour yesterday with the block on the garage floor - 3 guys standing on it and me trying to get it with a breaker bar and impact wrench (air gun)

any ideas on how to get it off?

ima bout to resort to using a blow torch lol

ps - i dont car if the bolt, pully or block gets damaged - i just want to get the crank and pistons out

we were considering making a small ramp and driving my 4x4 front wheel up onto it to hold it down lol

It's a bastard of a thing aye. My dad and I got mine of. On YouTube they show you how to. We sore one on their and it worked. All you need is a ratchet with big extension we put that through the rims on to the crank bolt place a block of timber on top put car into gear and got a massive steel pole. The ratchet handle goes up the pole and we literrally swung of it lol I'll send you the link

hmm try to anchor one of the flywheel bolts to a gear box mounting bolts by using a spanner.

ill try to find a pic for you.

Heres the pic (sorry spee for stealing your photo :P)

u didnt quiet understand, where the open end of the spanner is placed (this is wear one of the gearbox bolts go) put a gearbox bolt there and it will hold the spanner.

ok so that will lock the crank ... which i have already done

but i need to stop the engine from rolling over when i put pressure on the breaker bar

iv tried all manner of heavy objects short of driving my 4x4 onto it

With the breaker bar, if you try and apply leverage slowly you'll tilt the motor. With a breaker bar, get a large hammer and give it a massive smack. May take a few times but what you want to is overcome the friction holding the bolt in tight. Once you get it turned a bit, you should then be able to rattle gun it out. Give that a go!

The key with undoing any bolt/nut is impact.
You can't just hold it down, and swing off it.. You need to anchor it as solidly as possible, so when you yank on it with the breakerbar.. ALL force is put into the fastener, and not absorbed by whatever's 'not' holding it secure.

I like the 4x4 idea, make up something that will utilise engine mount locations and have a decent length of bar off the end.. With the 4x4 parked ontop of the bar the engine shouldn't move.. Stopping rotational force of the block is difficult, but by extending something out the side you get the advantage of leverage =)

Helps if you have a welder, a grinder, and a drill.. Haha.

Good method! They say 'crack' bolts for a reason.. Not 'bend' them.
Sudden impacts work better than applied weight any day
