Hey guys!

I drive a 89 EE3 Honda Civic Wagon in which im pretty sure has the same electrical setup (just a guess) as any EF civic's of CRX's of the same year.
So when i purchased this I obviously noticed the clock wasn't working, tested the cigarette lighter and it also wasn't working
ok so i've checked the fuse for both of them, the fuse is ok (i changed it anyways for reassurance and both still don't work)
now the cigarette lighter and clock run on the same fuse so I can only assume it has the same wirings (correct me if im wrong)
i've attached some photos but i don't think they are any help..

phone camera at night, if anyone wants better photos ill get them in the day :)

but yes I came to the conclusion that it could be a wiring problem as I actually changed the clocks around (at first I thought it was the clock that was failing so I ripped a working clock off another car and still didn't work :()
On the side of that im actually putting in a head unit as well, now would this be a problem for the head unit or is it totally different things?

I am honestly clueless of what the problem is and how it can be fixed, any guidance would be great!
Thanks
Sam

I think the cigarette lighter may have a relay, according to the FSM (factory service manual).

Also have you checked all the fuses in the engine bay fuse panel?

Both the clock and cigarette lighter run pretty simple wiring. Does the wiring look like its been hacked up by the previous owner?

Easiest thing to check first is if the plugs for each are grounded properly... do you have a multi tester?

here some wiring diagrams are:

Nine times out of 10 it will be the EARTH that is causing these items to fail. Religiously check all your EARTH connections.

I don't remember seeing a relay when working on any of my projects Mark but not to say it's not there in this instance.

thanks for all the help guys!
and sorry for the laggy update, been busy with other stuff lately :(

okay so I have checked all the fuses and they all are fine including the engine fuse and they are all fine
now I said before that the clock didn't work but i was assured it did.. and it really does work, but with a slight problem
now, the old gen clock has a tiny switch on the top right (on top of reset switch), now the clock ONLY works when that is pushed down as shown..

http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/9669/imag0835v.jpg

http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/9830/imag0836.jpg

I can verify it works because when its pushed down.. for 2 minutes it goes to 1:02
but once we release it, it goes back to 1:00 :(

back the cigarette lighter im still clueless
the wires are somewhat, okay and not okay at the same time
the constant 12V wire is somehow stripped of its plastic covering (which is the top most wire in picture.. (well at least im pretty sure its the constant 12V from wiring diagram

http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/7329/dsc03169uz.jpg

and this is the cable that connects to the cigarette lighter, and the back of the centre console, there cables seem to be fine at least

http://img651.imageshack.us/img651/9824/dsc03172or.jpg

now im starting to actually get concerned about the 12V thingymabob (i have no idea whats it called but the picture is obvious)
A friend told me that it might actually be the thingymabob is stuffed up, i took a close up photo of it and inside seems to making me cringe

I have a multimetre which I have no idea how to use, Ill probably do some research then get back and see

thanks for help guys!
any ideas let me know because im lost as hell

by the looks of that wiring it looks to have been hacked to bits. All those wires should be re-insulated. They could be shorting out against the metal components behind the radio.

http://media.honda.co.uk/car/owner/media/manuals/CRXManual/62SH200/16-119.pdf

if you look at the link above you will see that the WHT/BLU cable is constant power to keep time memory. and YEL is main clock power (at IGN1 key pos)

RED/BLK is irrelevant for clock function

Take your multimeter and set it to measure voltage. Ground one side against the car body and test to see if you have 12V all the time at WHT/BLU. Then turn your ignition on and test the YEL for 12v.

alright so im pretty sure the wire that I was talking about is the constant 12V, its the only missing wire from the wiring diagram

http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/2410/wagonwire.jpg

I can't faintly see the white blue wiring behind it so im pretty sure
So re-insulating the wires pretty much just means I should change them all right?
in order to do that ill need to strip the wires down to the very far back of the car?
and what Im getting here is that the constant 12V wire must be connected to a headunit for the clock to work, because that constant 12V wire is for the head unit

ill try out the multimetre as soon as I can, by car body do you mean the outside panel or just anywhere in the car?

sorry im completely new at this

okay so I've tried fixing this on my own but its not use
had to get the old man to give me a hand, he's and expert
we've found out the problem, will update shortly :)

well if your 12v constant is uncovered might even cause you to blow a fuse if youve checked everything and still no power check the fuses again

soooo what was the problem?

sorry for the wait
everything is all fixed now
The constant 12V wire was died pretty much causing all electricals to not work as it the one wire connects to all 3 componants (clock, head unit and cigarette lighter)
so what we did was cut and pull as much of the dead wire out and cross check has it melted and connected to any other wire
after that we just replaced the wire and cross checked that there is surge going through it and all other wires (lucky we didn't have to change the harness), also added a small time delay fuse to protect it from short circuiting or whatever

http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/1077/imag0873.jpg

We also have another problem, think that my ignition barrel might be stuffed as sometimes the car is switched off but there is still power going through (headunit still on clock etc..), checked the switched 12V wire and its fine so no doubt its probably that
wiring up head unit was no problem thanks to www.the12volt.com/ :)

in all from this
