Hi guys. I was just wondering if any of yous could spare a moment and explain to me what an offset is. I tried wikipedia and i still don't really understand it.

Also could someone explain what the (+35) (or what ever number it may be) means when people talks about their rims.

Example - 17x8 (+35) ? ? ? ?

Thanks.

It is the 'distance' from the inside mounting surface to the centerline of the wheel as shown in the photo. +35 refers to 35mm from the hub mounting surface to the centerline. Once you get deeper dish wheels the value becomes less +20, +10 etc. 0 offset is when the centerline of wheel is 'in line' with the mount surface. Once you get deeper deeper dish wheel the center line swaps to the other side of the mount surface and this is where the -ve values come in. -10, -20 etc. Make sense?

In layman's terms... offset and width work together to make a rim seem to stick out or sink in.

If you have a high offset the mounting plate will be close to the outside of the wheel making it sink in... Maybe you need to compare them side by side..

This is a high offset wheel - the mounting plate is quite close to the outside edge of the rimhttp://interiors.carsdesigns.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Akita-Wheels-AK-77-16x7-Black-Red-Ring-High-Offset.jpg

This is a low (or negative) offset wheel. the mounting plate is quite far away from the outside of the wheel

maybe this means something to you? look at the bottom half and where the mounting plate is

pretty much the less offset you have, the more boss you are

offset, the name literally explains it.

how far the mounting face is offset from the edge of the wheel.
