I have been getting a noise in first gear when the engine is cold. I heard it first a few weeks ago in the mornings when I have been driving to work. It sound to me like a belt slipping! My wife says it sounds like a soft air horn!!

It only happens when the engine is cold, you can fell a small vibration thought the car and when the car moves in to 2nd gear it goes away.
My car was in for its 10k service 2 weeks ago and I told the dealer but they said they could not hear the the noise on the test drive.

The noise does not happen all the time and I have been making notes on when it happens so I can take it back to my dealer so they can hear it.

Any you guys would know what it could be????

Could be synchro, could be the gear itself.

What I'd do is take it to the dealer, leave it overnight, and then tell them to test it first thing in the morning, when its cold.

Sent from my custard cannon like Peter North.

Every 3rd person who comes on this forum had issues with their gearbox of some sort.

Makes me question the quality of the box or the recommended service schedule.....

Not necessarily never happened in any other gear for me and when I pulled my clutch out it was the bearing without a doubt all clogged up and when I moved the bearing you could hear it

yeah, its definately possible.

if so I think I might be in for a fight with my dealer. I think the first thing is to make sure they hear the noise!!!!

I have still to take my Euro in to see my dealer. The noise in my gearbox starts when the car is cold and stop. When I drive off in to noise starts only for 2-4 seconds then when the gearbox goes into 2nd the noise fades away within a second. When does your euro noise happen only in 1st gear???

2-4 seconds won't be your clutch release bearing unless you ride the clutch like a boss

Hmm, should have mentioned that it was an auto, since the auto does not have a clutch release bearing.

I reckon something is worn or the ATF might be low. Can you check the ATF level? There should be a dipstick somewhere around the gearbox area.

I checked the ATF but the level was fine.

I drove it this morning and the noise was not there. But I drove it 30 mins ago and the noise was there!! I can not work out a pattern of when the noise starts!!!

I have had this noise too Sambo. In first it sounds like a whine, like something is rubbing on something. Also when I change into D from P and I am on a hill there is a loud clunk, this is even with my foot on the brake. Obviously moving from P to R to D. My 3 year warranty runs out in February 2012 so I am keen to get it looked at.

Yes same here. When I took the car out of the garage tonight after work, my wife had driven it in the day. The engine was cold and just as the car started off there was a whining, lightly buzzing sound coming from the engine. I suspect it is the transmission from what I have read. My car also has the pinging issue so I am getting ready to throw the book at Honda very soon on these issues. My car is still covered under warranty (done 47,000kms). If they refuse to fix these issues for free, they had better look out!

How long have you had this noise? I just noticed it over the last few weeks about the last 2000K.

Bought the car 4 months ago second hand from Honda Dealer. It had around 44,000kms on it so we have driven around 3,000kms. It only started happeniong about 1 week ago! We have a lot of hills around here maybe that has something to do with it?

I left my euro into the dealer on Monday to stay for the night. Arrange to drive it with the head mechanic the next morning. The dealer even gave me a Civic as a loner for the night.:D

The next morning(Tuesday) I drove my car around the back streets with head mechanic and we heard the noise once!!! The mechanic agreed that he heard something but due to the noise was only heard once it would hard to diagnosis. He asked me to leave it with them to do checks.

when we got back to the dealers the service manager asked the mechanic did he hear it which he reply "I hear something"

The service manager told me that they had and other car with the similar noise and they had swapped the transmission over with a new one but the noise was still there.

He said "Honda don't know what it is and a rep was coming up to hear it but it may be put down to operational noise"

So I left it there for the rest of the day and got a call that afternoon saying it was ready for collection.

Spoke to the service manager again and he just told me that due to the intermittent nature of the noise it was preventing full diagnosis. He is to speak to the Honda rep when he comes next week and will await Honda directive on the matter.

I told him they could keep the car for a few days for them to do a full diagnosis. Which he replied" we need the load car for a customer tomorrow and unit Honda give them a directive there is no point"

I said " I am going to be keeping a log when the noise happens so we can see any pattern to it" he agreed that more information will help the case with Honda.

I will be contact them in weeks time to see what Honda has said!!!!

Clunk is normal. When you in P, there is a physical blocking mechanism to prevent the gearbox from turning. When you park on a hill, the mechanism is pushing against this block and when you go from P to R, you hear the clunk. Happens on most of the autos of any brand with a normal auto gearbox.

They wouldn't change a gearbox in a facelift so maybe its just the new gearbox sorting its shit out have you driven it hard that might be the problem should baby a car for the first 10000kms
