Its come to my recent attention that whenever a gear is engaged or the car is revving, i get a very strong hissing sound. Sort of like engine noise, but not as clean and cut as engine noise. I have a muffler, but its adjustable. From inside the cabin, you can still hear it when the muffler is open. Which means its decently loud. It just sounds like a whole lot of metal being put to work, no grinding sounds or anything. Is this normal? And if not what could it be? It has been like this for a while.

Here's the thing, noises are hard to describe in text.

Your car makes a noise when it's engine is running? Umm yeah. Unless you get someone with experience to actually listen to the noise I doubt you'll get much in the way of results.

On the positive side, if something was seriously wrong it usually escalates to catastrophic failure pretty quickly. If the problem ain't getting worse it's probably not serious.

as said above hard to diagnose over the internet..

but i had a hissing noise and it was a cracked silicone hose, connected from my CAI to throttle body.. just have a quick look.
mine was old and it cracked where it was clamped on the throttle body.

bought a new samco hose and problem gone.

also does it happen when parked and u rev ? if it does u can rule out gear box / diff

Have you got your airbox cover on??
I have a whilstling/hissing noise, when the cover is off - noise is common.

if none of these are the case, I can tell you from my experience that engines (especially high revving hondas) are naturally noisy, sometimes you might just hear more of the engines running noises through the firewall. I know I hear a sh*tload through mine haha. I used to freak out about noises all the time but in most cases if theres something wrong it will be visible or feelable through your cars performance.

Yea, Thats true. I guess i just get paranoid. Ive taken it to a honda specialist and he reckons the F20s are quite 'rattly' from factory. So i dont have anything to worry about, i hope.. Its not through the firewall thought. Its more from under the car, like a pressure loss somewhere. Weird. I will take it to Honda soon and see what they say.

it could just be the noise of the driveshaft spinning or the gearbox or something, maybe just more audible in your car then other RWD's.

but yeah any honda engine that revs to 8500-9000RPM will have noisy valvetrains etc., my car included. which would be what they meant by rattly :)

Just for those who may have a slight ticking sound from engine.. Ive adjusted the valves and the problem is sorted.

There's hissing sounds if you have a cracked flex pipe in your exhaust/header system, you might wanna give that a look.
