Hi guys,

I have purchased a DC5R 3-4 months ago and today I bought it to honda service centre for a minor service and check. As part of the minor service, they checked the whole car including conducting an oil change and filter and they found that the lhs drive shaft is starting to leak. The mechanic at the service department advised that over time the bearing will move and cause oil leak, and said to monitor it and if it gets worse then have it repaired. He said it will cost $250 dollars to repair through Honda.

I am wanting to know if this amount is reasonable or overpriced? However he knew what he was talking about since he has been there for 30+ years. He explained everything to me.. was quite a nice guy.

Also, is this a common issue with dc5r? and what would be a cause of this? Anyone else experience this as well?

Thanks in advance.

I take it you mean one of the boots on the CV joints on the driveshafts? $250 is a little on the expensive side. I had a small split in one of my boots so I ordered a replacement boot kit from a dealer in the US (Part no. 44018-S9A-000 according to my notes) for around $30 and then pulled out the axle myself to change it. Couldn't get the outer joint off the axle so gave up and took it to a driveline specialist and the guy only charged my $20 to change the boot.

In your case to remove and refit an axle to a DC5 should be no more than 1.5 hours of labour for an experience Honda mechanic, and any CV place should only charge $20-40 to change the boot so that price is a little inflated. The only complication is that to remove the passenger side axle requires draining the gearbox oil, which you shouldn't really re-use unless you are very ghetto. So if they are quoting you to replace the gearbox oil as well then that price isn't too bad.
