Hi all, i am looking to replace the tyres on my GD VTIS Jazz. Current tyres are Bridgestone 185/55/15. These are very expensive tyres to replace. The current tyres are the 2nd set on this car and I replaced them with what the car with new. They cost about $230 a tyre when replaced.

This time around I am looking at Kumho KU31's 195/50/15. At $85 a tyre including delivery, they seem like a good cheap option. 195/55/15 are $110 from the same retailer.

Has anyone got any idea as to whether 195's will fit the standard VTIS 15 inch rim (I am pretty sure it won't be an issue as it's only an extra 10cm in width) and what effect will 50 profile have on the speedometre. I am guessing not much but maybe read at 100km when in effect doing 97km/h or there abouts.

your thoughts...

THANKS

standard size is 195/55/15, it will definitely fit.

as for the effect on speedo, it is almost negligible maybe 0.5km off?

kuhmo ku31s are a good budget performance tyres, however they definitely lack the grip of toyos t1rs or bridgestone grids, however with that being said i don't think you are really aiming for performance so i'd say $85 a corner is a really decent deal!

Yeah I agree. I am actually on the kumho 195/55/15. It fits on my GD. So don't worry. It's pretty alright for the price. So far I don't have any complains on it. Hope this helps.

thanks guys. they are on sale through an ebay store. Tempe Tyres in Sydney. $85 a corner and they will deliver for free. Just need to find a tyre fitter that will fit them without getting pissed off i didn't buy tyres from them. I think Bob Janes will fit customer supplied tyres, fit and balance for $12 a tyre.

If you change to 195/50/15 tyres your speedo will over read by 1.5%. The overall circumference will go from 1836.3mm to 1809.6mm (-26.7mm). Therefore if your speedo is accurate and it says 100kmh, you will actually be doing 98.5kmh. However, my experience with my '07 Vti-s is that it already under reads by 3kmh at 100kmh. Therefore if you change to 195/50/15 tyres your speed will read about 4.5% more than actual.

EDIT - sorry that should be OVER reads by 3 kmh at 100kmh.
Cheers

Hey Doe.man, Have a look here. http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html It's a handy little site. I just compared my speedo reading to my GPS which is 100% accurate.

Hi GU357. At #5 I should have said over reads by 3kmh, not under reads. (if the speedo says you're doing 100kmh you are actually doing 97kmh). So you would have been only 4km over the speed limit. Sorry about that important little mistake.

has anyone had any experience with 205/50 R15s? running 195/50 ATM, need more grip!

EG52NV - What are the RE002's like? been running RE001's currently, and they've stacked up pretty well. nice price BTW, most places are selling them @ $159 per corner.

Ben has a review on OH for the RE002, I reckon they're amazing though the wife's auto jazz ain't gonna be seeing any mountain passes lol also chose it Coz it was cheaper then the 185/55/15 Bridgestone budget tyre costco had which was $150

185/55 is an odd size. 195/50 is alot more popular

i had 195/55 r15's on my enkei's when i bought them, and they were awesome. BUT they are/were almost 300 a corner. i bought the RE001's pretty much weeks after the first release, and i think these have done maybe 30,000km, with them sitting in the shed for about a year, then on the car while i sat @ a garage for about a year, THEN the last 3 months of torture, (after the turbo conversion, 303nm torque @3.5K RPM, can't use full throttle in 1st, even thou there's not enough load to spin the turbo to 12psi, (turbo's a little big, GT25BB with 12PSI waste gate)), so we're pretty much destroyed these tyres..

the RE001's were almost as good as the G3's, which have more grip, but the RE001's had better turn in.

rotel, if u jump the 195's to 205's couldnt that make it worse seeing as you have too much power for your wheels to put down as is, giving it larger area for the same amount of weight wouldnt help would it?
or being there is more grip would actually help take off? or is this another one of those finiding the balance things?

Arty- How do you know the GPS is 100% accurate. Im sure my one is off it told me i was doing 5 when i was going no where rest of the time it tells me im doing +5kms to what my speedo says.

hmmm.... Isn't the weight distribution irrelevent, as it's sprung weight, and it's basically power transfer to the road, so the more contact you have with the road, the power can be distributed over a larger area, meaning you're less likely to exceed the maximum grip per inch of the tyre in question?

(i'm tired, been a long day, so i hope i've conveyed my thought correctly)

that what you're saying is true, super wide tyres wouldn't exsist, yeah?

i mean, in drag racing you lower the tire pressures to give you more contact with the road, giving you more grip. Maybe that's it... maybe my pressures are too high, (38-40 front, 32 rear) shouldn't be...

oh, and issue's not so much off the mark, but from 4K RPM in 1st and 2nd, (car's power and torque curve is BASICALLY stock L15A1 until about 2.5Krpm, were it starts making boost... it's a little peeky)

GU357
07-09-2011, 10:26 PM
yeh your right but i was thinking if the tyres are too wide then u dont have enough weight to put down over all that contact path so it would be easier to let loose.
i dunno maybe im just having brain spasms LOL

also with drag racing they have low psi (on the out tyres) so the tyres slap the road and jolt them off, kinda cool. and the tyres change in size as they go faster like its very own CVT ahaha.

GU357
08-09-2011, 08:08 PM
yeh but they handle great, im on the same as you SDX91 and i noticed that the steering is much more responsive, less sloppy and it brakes better, although i did upgrade from 14's ahaha

ss-rotel
09-09-2011, 01:11 PM
.... i used to run 17x7's, with admitedly cheap tires, (achilies), and my 15x7 enkei's with the re001's handle sooo much better.

It's probably the un-sprung weight difference. these things, inc tyres, weigh less then the ones on a V8 Super car. (and yes, i know, my boss's brother owns a stonebrother's racing falcon, which i've helped with on the odd occation... )

I decided not to go with Tempe Tyres. Too many bad reviews when I searched on google for them.

However, I found the same tyre in the Kmart junk mail that arrived today. $97 a tyre fitted. Bob Jane, in the same junk mail, are doing them for $107 a tyre fitted BUT have a price match gurantee. If Bob Jane are true to their advertising, I should be able to get them for $96 a corner fitted. Cheaper than Tempe tyres after I have to pay a tyre fitter to fit them - about $12 a tyre.

Bob jane's $107 deal with a price match of $96 sounds like the go.

yeah guys nearly ran into a pole last night going around a round-a-bout (was raining in sydney). so i do need to get some new tyres. im thinking some ku31s or like re001s. what you reckon?

fillit
25-09-2011, 01:19 PM
KU31s are pretty good all rounders, a tad on the hard compound so it doesn't grip as well in the dry, but definitely bang for buck

from what i've heard, RE002 are really really good track tyres, either way they are all safe bets. Just see how far your budget stretches.

i sold my jazz because i was after something different, i felt i achieved everything i could with the car and there wasn't anything left i wanted to do without emptying my wallet. Also the depreciation + insurance costs was annoying me so i sold up. I had rp01s on the car which are long gone, atm im looking at selling my enkei SC03s 16x7 + 35 if you're interested, 4x100 stud pattern same as jazz, want to get some new rims.
