Are there signs of when your fuel pump isn't working properly?
Eg. vtec won't engage or your losing some power from the car...

if vtec wont engage its coz u have low oil pressure or as you would know the engine hasnt warmed up.
or a dirty or finished vtec solenoid
does it rev out to redline ?

Check oil pressure

Oil pressure is all good and even when the temp is warm, still doesn't engage but it redlines all the way to 8rpm. But iv noticed it's lost power once it hits vtec, and when petrol temp gets on near low l lose more power out of it!
I'm guessing when petrol is low the fuel pump works harder to pump the petrol but iv got a feeling pump has shit itself, and don't think it's ever been changed... Ideas?

Common reasons for VTEC to not engage:
Solenoid not working or resistance too high (ohms)
Temperature too low
Low oil pressure, low oil, dirty oil
Current or recent CEL's
Speedometer not connected or not working
ECU may need resetting
Basically anything the ECU notices to be abnormal will cause it to not engage.
In most cases it's the solenoid. Mine was only ONE ohm out of it's normal resistance range and that caused it to not work. :S
Fuel pump is a possibility but I'd be checking the solenoid with a multi meter first.

How do you reset the ecu, plug out battery? Where can I get my hands on a multi reader?
And whats 'restiance to high'-ohms?
By the looks of the solenoid it's all good and no leaks. Oil got changed last week and oil is good level, checked for cels and was all good, speedo is working, and I also got a compression test done, that was all good too! Changed the thermo two months ago as well, coolant all fine.
I have a feeling it is the fuel pump lately it's been making thumping noises while it primes/turn the key over...what to dooo....

hey man 2 ways to reset your ecu.
1.plug out the fuse from your ecu then put it back in after a few seconds
2.disconnect the battery (best to leave it off for as long as you can).. to do this ;
1) uplug the negative off the battery (black)
2) leave the negative off for as long as you can (few hours - some people do overnight)
3)connect the negative cable back
4)start the car up and keep it running till it gets warm (shouldn't take more then 10 minutes - on a normal day)
5)done - your cars ecu will be reset
Thats how to reset your ecu, if that doesn't work then yes check your fuel pump and all the other bits and pieces, but usually when my vtec doesn't kick in its because my car isn't warm , and one time i reset'ed my ecu and helped.
Hope this helps.
Goodluck.

Thanks mate, il disconnect my battery tonight and leave it overnight.
I replaced the fuel pump two weeks ago still the same, iv been told it could be the solenoid, there's no leaks on the solenoid and looks fine.Is there a test I can do to the solenoid? Iv done a compression test and was pretty happy with that!
What could it be?
It's weird, at one point I have vtec but all of a sudden, nothing!

have you tested it with a multimeter yet?? by the sounds of it I can almost garuntee that it's the same problem I had.
IT DOESN'T MATTER if it's not leaking because resistance is electrical. look up what the NORMAL resistance range is and how to check it, it was as simple as using a multimeter for me, which you can pick up at supercheap for around $5 sometimes.
resistance is measured in a thing called ohms, if you look it up on google you'll be able to read all about it. if the ELECTRICAL resistance is even 1 tiny bit out of its normal operating range, the piston below the solenoid will NOT actuate. therefore not allowing oil into the passages in the head to engage VTEC.
if this is the case, it is as simple as replacing the solenoid.
let me know if you need another solenoid because I have a spare, and I will even check the resistance on this one to make sure it's ok, if you want it that is. just shoot me a PM.

Nah I haven't tested the solenoid,
I'm not sure how to, is there a DIY for it?
il let you no if I need a solenoid,
Thanks mate

there might be on another website. use google search.

does it rev out in the vtec range? or does it stop early like a limiter cutting in
dc2screama

Yes it does rev out to 8000-8200, but its in the low cam if you no what I mean

You reckon I should test it first? Or chances are it's the solenoid..

how do u no ur oil pressure is good ? do you have a gauge ? coz id recommend changing ur oil first

I changed the oil only and still same thing, oil was sitting at the right level on the stick

check solenoid with multimeter.... always make sure you know what the problem is before spending money on trouble shooting if you can.
