My Diff is whining. Metal Shavings came out of it even with a few chucks of teeth. clicking in reverse. I just knew this would happen soon. last piece of the car i haven't replaced. and now it's time is on its way. I'm trying to find what the best option to take is with this. i want to make sure i do it the proper way. I will eventually supercharge my car in a year or so, i will clutch dump here n there, i will have fun. so needs to be kinda bulletproof. i see the comptech reinforcement kits and etc but i dont think that is much of an upgrade. I found Puddymod on the forums and his stuff looks awsome. But i don't know what to ask him for, what i should spend and what is a good setup and what isnt. i do know about the 4.77 ratio and i definately want to put that in while im at it. i've aleady got heavy duty axles but looking at different spacers as my ones bolts come loose. Any help would be appreciated. i am aware i need atleast a couple grand for something decent.

Do the Puddy Diff upgrade - I don't know if it'll be bulletproof, but it's better than standard.. Either that, or get upgraded gears and rebuild your diff. It's probably the best way to do it especially if youre going forced induction.

Man, how did you buy your car - how come everything is f****d. Either that, or you have a very, very heavy foot.

If yours is pretty much gone do what I did, buy an old diff to keep you going and have your one rebuilt/reinforced.

Tassill over on au.s2ki.com has just replaced his diff with a Puddymod so has an old one for sale.

i don't know how much Puddy will cost especially with shipping/postage. the car is still driveable. it's not gone. but i want to catch it before it's gone. i hate when my car is not driveable and i need to get towing involved. most annoying.

How would i have it rebuilt reinforced? who can i trust to do it, what should i buy for it how should it be done etc.. i found OS Giken Super Lock or something on ebay for 1100 or so. looks awsome! apparently my housing is fine. according to my mechanic. just inside of it that's going. he said its most probably the center something. really lost on this one. wish this puddy dude was in melbourne! damn it.

Maybe you need to frequent au.S2ki.com more often. There is thread on my rebuild called 'Diff destruction'.

Oh, and like I said in another diff thread, spend $1100 on a center and you'll probably be blowing money on a part that doesn't need to be replaced, and ignoring a couple that do.

i couldnt really understand what you done in the end? just saw pictures. sorry i'm not a diff pro at all. i just go by all the reading i do. i sent puddy an e-mail. i guess i'll wait for his response. just today i parked in an underground parking and there was a very steep drive way. cars were banked up trying to get out and i was stuck on like a 60 degree angle. i was trying to rev the engine and let the clutch go on time, but then it felt like something was letting go. i couldnt tell if it was my new clutch or my diff or what. i was soo worried i wouldnt be able to get out. i asked the guys behind me to move aside and let me roll back and wait for everyone to clear and i go up with speed. at the top i still had to stop and i tried again but i just dumped it and smoked it up to get up. otherwise i wouldve collected everyone behind me. when i drive forward and then reverse i get a click from the rear.

Well diffs don't slip as such. They are a positive linkage between the prop shaft and the axles. All they do is portion the torque between the two wheels. The only way the diff can cause you to lose traction is if one wheel is off the ground. Was it?

(Ahh you say, but we have a limited slip diff! No we don't. It is a torque sharing diff. If a wheel has no grip (resistance) the other had no torque.)

If not, there is no way the clutch can 'let go' unless it is catastrophically damaged, in which case you won't be driving any further.

If you were revving but not moving either:
A)Wheel was spinning
B)Your clutch was slipping

Diff Technics in sydney say they got a full conversion to the nissan diff which will be about 4 grand. i dont know if i should bother with that? i dont want to spend 1g-2g on a setup that will die a year down the track again. i want something i can have fun in and not worry about it.

Why do you assume it will only last a couple of years?

well the one in it at the moment was replaced by ultra tune just before i bought it from the previous owner. which was 9 months ago. it was a reco'd unit though. it's funny though. he first got his clutch changed and then a week later his diff went. the exact same thing is happening to me now? wtf?

I would assume the Diff Technis one would last longer.

yer well should i bother spending 4gs on it? do i need to? is puddymods one better and cheaper? is the comptech reinforcment kit sufficient enough? like im sure there's soo many options. i just want to know what they all are so i can explore em all n pick what's best.

Diff technics is overkill for your set up.

Puddy does great stuff but I'd be reluctant to blow so much money on freight alone.

I'd say unless you're looking to abuse your car a good stock diff will do. If you want something that can handle some abuse and maybe a different ratio take a stuffed diff to a diff specialist and ask for billet end caps, better fasteners and a steel collar. Take my pics with you when you go.

is it something bad or wrong? he just tightened them and topped up my diff oil on Monday. does it mean they've already come loose? i've been babying it since then.

i think i'll go with the third option. i'll take your pics and ask for that. did you do pretty much what Chris Barry recommended?

Mazda 4.10 M068-27-110A

ARP fasteners of the same length/thread.

Cryo treatment and crack testing from MTCE http://www.mtce.com.au/

If you are keen, use a die grinder to smooth off the complete internals of the housing and caps, then get it shot peened.

MTCE provide a full race preparation service ( smooth off sharp edges, shot peen etc)

I sourced a crown wheel and pinion and took 'a stuffed diff to a diff specialist and ask for billet end caps, better fasteners and a steel collar'.

man just do my setup, i blew my diff and everything inside it. so i brought kaaz 1.5way lsd, 4.44 gears, new bearings, j;s racing solid crush colar. only problem with mine is i ran out of funds so had 2 buy a standard housing -.- but and soon im getting it all transferred into a comptech diff housing. BUT no matter how strong u make ur diff, abusing it will shorten its life regardless. i use 2 clutch dump aswell. but now im over that shit!
ull understand once it costs u almost 4k 2 get a new diff made. thats how much mine cost and i dont regret it for a second.
plus that 1.5 way lsd also changes the feel of the car quite abit ;) especiialy since u got the 2.9 billet axels (lucky focker)

You spent $4K and have a standard housing? Not money well spent in my opinion.

I spent less than half that. I don't get to stick no KAAZ or J's stickers on my car but at least I got a strong diff.

4k bro i'll get an R200 conversion. i agree with Auss2000. not well spent at all. I'll spend just over 2gs and get a Stage 2 puddy mod shipped that'll be stronger.

The LSD centre for the s2k is weak aswell
If I didn't get a new LSD and didn't pay so much labour then it would cost me under 2k lol. And I've herd that with the r200 diff conversion people are having more gearbox problems as that is the next weekest link..n id rather blow a diff then a gearbox
Brad if ur selling ur comptech housing I'll buy it off u asap!

R200 diff included. Diff Technics in Sydney. just need the labor. which i have found my people who do a good job for a good price. but i've already put my deposit on a Gearbox and stock diff that i found for 3gs. off a 43k kms AP1 s2000 from japan. Going to hold off my new wheels and get the diff and gearbox done. I'm going to baby it once i get the stock diff and gearbox. but will save up and upgrade the diff once i supercharge in a year or two.
