hey guys,

just got some depressing news from the honda dealership i went to to get my car checked out.

seems like i need a rebuild of my engine, and they quoted me roughly 16k!

so i figured if i'm going to be spending that much i might as well try and get a 2.2 right?

by any chance can anyone out there point me in the right direction on where i might be able to suss out a kit or something to get my car fix please??

thank you...

I have a spare engine... might be going back into my car shortly, but if you want to buy an engine, let me know.

$16k? WTF?

to rebuild the engine, u shouldn't have to spend more than half that. $16k you could buy a great deal, might as well jump on s2ki for engine kits, that is if you don't wanna remain stock. Just google search engine rebuilders and ask for quotes. No way i'd pay $16k.

16k from Honda sounds right. That'd be all genuine parts and crazy labour.

16k at an engine rebuild place, with you supplying aftermarket parts would be a pretty stout motor.

Jeez, that's insane. Better start saving then Pang! PS what's the problem with your engine?

Well, I guess if you want all genine parts, then order from
http://www.cflhonda.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=getJointLocator&siteid=215502&chapter=APG656&sectionids=10,4117&make=12&model=S2000&year=2000&catalogid=1&displayCatalogid=0

Im sure you'd save a shit load more. And there would be heaps of things you wouldn't have to buy anyway.

from what honda is telling me is that normally the car should be running at 36 psi oil pressure, but my one is running at 26 psi, and to them that's a sign that the engine is on it's way out.

although it can still run and drive fine, it wont be wise to keep driving it cause it will make it worse.

but to really find out what's wrong with it they said they will have to strip it, and if they were going to strip it there is no point in putting it back together so might as well do a rebuild.

i only went in to check what this knocking sound that was coming from the head but didn't think i would be getting a report saying i need a rebuild... sigh...

and the knocking sound was from the timing chain tensioner which also needs replacing... fml? sigh

didn't think i would be facing this many issues since it's the 2006 model as well..

thanks s2kjn i'll start looking up the s2ki fourms =]

How many k's does your car have? I'm pretty sure you could buy a good engine with less k's and have it fitted for way less than that. Like half that. Not by a Honda dealer though. Find a specialist.

Also, find out what is wrong with your engine. Is it piston slap, bore scrape, or something bottom end like a spun bearing. If it's bottom end (bearings) it's probably worth a rebuild.

If the knocking is your timing chain tensioner that's a $150 fix if you have a 10mm spanner. Probably $300 if you don't.

Low oil pressure could be a sign of wear but I wouldn't be taking the Stealership's word for it. Get it to a specialist.

As above stealerships will talk bs all they want and try their best to convince you that you require their professional assistance; and charge half a mil while at it. Lurk around and search in s2ki, you'll find different solutions and you can decide which is best for your application.

If its a 'knocking' noise as oppose to a ticking noise, then I'd be quite concerened if I were you, particularly rod knock, and go with what Aus said, there are a couple of low mileage f20c engines for sale. But if its your TCT, then I dunno why your stressing! costs less than $200 and easy fix to DIY. At least you can elimnate that. Strange how a 06 model can be having those type of engine issues so early.

sounds like bullshit.

id be getting a second opinion from a reputable mechanic
if there isnt enough oil pressure it could or is most likely a blockage which can be fixed.

if thats your car in you pic its not an 06

Or a worn oil pump, which can be replaced.

thanks you all, i will do some more researching on s2ki

and i got a friend who is going to ref me to seekers motorsport to have them have a look at it as well.

and no the red s2k in my DP is my previous one which also had many issues.

once again thank you all! you've all given me some hope that it's not as bad as what "stealership" quoted me.

I have little love for stealerships but also realise that if an engine is damaged it is not in the stealerships interest to find the cheapest solution for you. They only deal in new genuine parts which is the 'premium' way of solving your problem.

The cheapest way is to do it yourself with secondhand parts. This is my preferred way because I have some experience and aptitude (and a workshop full of tools).

Somewhere in the middle is the best combination probably.

You 'think' that or you know that?

I think if you looked into you'd get some surprises like 'core exchange' for example.
