Ok, i currently have a 92' Honda Civic SI (Automatic) The gearbox has just recently collapsed on me.

I have 3 options that i need to choose from.

A) Second hand gearbox:
I can take my chances and get a second hand gearbox. ( Not the best idea as i have a 50/50 chance of it been in good condition.

B) Recondition the gearbox:
Recondition the gearbox and start from $1500 and could effectivly rise to $3000 in cost

Or option C) which i think would be the best option

C) Manual Conversion:
Get a manual conversion for $1710 Thats all the parts needed and labor.

I think option c would be the best option because im getting a manual, a manual Gearbox is alot easier to fix, and less money.

The things i need to know is whether there is something that wont work e.g clutch or anything basically because it is not a manual car.

What are the implications of doing a manual conversion? What things can go wrong?

I would also like to see what your option would be if you were in my situation.

If i do get a conversion do i have to take it to the pits/licensing center?

Thanks for the help guys.

well if its done correctly nothin can really go wrong
just make sure ur gettin a new clutch and everythin, get a headvy duty one so u wont have to pull the box off again to replace it to quick, especially if u drive hard!

I prefer Manual, less problems and more fun to drive, You can also change your instrument cluster if you don't want it to look like a ex-auto. Also throw in a short shifter while its getting replaced anyway.

i did a auto to manual swap in my old 88 hb....best thing i ever did, never had a problem with it. i did it myself. although i have heard that stuff needs to be welded in an eg so yeah it would be a good idea to get it done by pro's....

i would assume the cut outs are already there for the clutch pedal linkage! seeing cars of the same model came in manual too
the bolts holes and everything SHOULD be there but its best to check, they're probaby covered by rubber grommets
actually, wait, he's gettin the pro's to do it, so it shouldn't be a problem!

the only thing i had to cut in my old car was a hole for the clutch cable to go through...the rest was all bolt on..... oh and i had to make the hole bigger for the shifter...

I have never heard of someone complaining about a manual swap, just people complaining they wished they bought manual in the first place. Autos have too many problems, rough gear changing and rough idle due to bad torque converter.

DO THE SWAP (Just offer them $1500 cash- no receipt):D
