what model they are
ie. ek4 is the vti-r
ek9 is the optioned model with recaros and stuff
others will know more about this but that is the general idea.
my eg4 was a gl
and an eg6 is the b16a vti-r
you understand?
I am confusing myself now i think
96'-2000
Ek4 = Gen 6 Civic Hatch/sedan(ferio) Vti-R/SiR II EK (b16a2+hydro clutch)
EK9 = Gen 6 JDM Civic Hatch Type R (b16b+hydro clutch)
EM1 = Gen 6 Civic Coupe VTi-R (b16a2+hydro clutch)
92'-95
EG6 = Gen 5 JDM EG civic Hatch SiR II (b16a2+hydro clutch) - Not Vti-R
EG9 = Gen 5 JDM EG Civic SiR II Sedan / ferio (b16a2+hydro clutch)
'89-'92
EF8 = Gen 2 JDM CRX SiR (b16a+cable clutch)
EF9 = Gen 4 JDM Civic Hatch SiR (b16a+cable clutch)
Feel free to point out any mistakes I've made..

The number is generally just the revision. Higher number = newer model.

Vti is EG5. I dont get why they kept it the same for the Vti and Si... why have the same chassis number? me no, know.
EG6 is jap spec only.
EG5 would be the Vti and Si model.

JDM
eg6 = (b16a dohc vtec)(can't get here in AUS)
AUDM
eg5 = Vti / Si (VTi = sohc 1.6L vtec d16y1 | Si = 1.6L DOHC nonvtec d16a8)
eg4 = GLi/GL (gli = efi 1.5L | gl = dual carb 1.5L) + (late model 1.5L single carb breeze)
eg3 = breeze (carb 1.3L)
So, if you want an EG with vtec, your looking for eg5 vti model.

Wrote the wrong engine code, D16y8 is a vtec engine.
Always though the Si engines were a dohc engine, but on closer inspection are infact a sohc engine. My mistake

Ok i confused myself completely here..
I was correct the first time quoting D16a8, and it is a twincam engine with vtec-e. You can audibly hear the "vtec" kick in at 5000 rpm..
Very confused now
trism
29-10-2008, 11:26 PM
NO
it does NOT have vtec

ZZZZZ lol rebound u are lost kient too lol :P
just read my post probably, it is all correct there!!!
D16Y1 = EG VTEC SOHC
D16Y8 = EJ8 VTEC SOHC
D16A8 = DOHC NO VTEC
EG only comes DOHC VTEC is EG6, Which you can't get here in Australia unless it was privately imported!
And wth is vtec-e lol. You can't audibly hear any vtec in a d16a8, its probably just the POD filter your hearing. (Had someone else say they swore on there moms life there si sedan was vtec and you could hear it, and when i went to look, no vtec, and when driving, it was just a pod filter zzz)

Interesting question - do the numbers have any actual reference to the cars engine or the like? Ie the BMW 318i has a 1.8litre motor. Now I know the ek9 doesnt have a 1.9 litre engine, but is it meant to refer to anything else?
trism
30-10-2008, 04:43 PM
no, the numbers are just the trim level

I also did some research on VIN numbers and what they mean. This is what I found, and I've done this because it makes it easier to work out what stock Pick'n'Payless have in the yard, when I'm looking for parts to match.
VIN: JHM-ED6-3-3-00-S-XXXXXX is broken down as follows:
JHM is obviously the Honda Motor Co. of Japan
"ED6" is the model variant, so ED6 is a 1500 Hatchback; there were ten variants altogether, from ED1 to ED7 and EC7 to EC9
"3" is the body shape and the transmission type, so this is a 5 speed manual with 2 doors. If its a "4" then it's an auto; a "5" is a 5 speed manual sedan and "6" is a 4 speed auto sedan
"3" is the most important number as this tells you the level of trim. Honda call it the "vehicle grade", as follows -
"2" is a DX (EC7, EC8, ED1, ED3, ED5, ED6 are all KQ) or a GL (EC9, ED2, ED3, ED6 are all KY)
"3" is a GL (ED3 and ED6 are KQ) or EX (ED3 is a KY)
"6" is a 1.6i (ED4 and ED7)
"7" is a 1.6i -16 (ED7)
"0" is a fixed Honda code
"0" tells you the year model (but not necessarily the manufacturing date; that is on a separate tag on the passenger side radiator support)
"S" means the car was built at Honda's Suzuka plant
http://www.motorhelmets.net/pics-index/honda-japan-plant.jpg
[Note the road course/track on the left of the photo]
And inside the production line:
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s40/infotechplus/EFHonda/Honda-plant.jpg
"XXXXXX" are the last six digits and the car's serial number.
here yar
