you aren't required to do a VIV inspection if the vehicle is currently registered in NSW.

I purchased my car from NSW, rolled under NSW plates for a month then once I had a vicroads appointment available i went there to surrender my plates/show bill of sale/show rwc/ paid rego and paid for new plates.

you will then receive a paper which says you've surrendered your plates, sent it off to RTA and a sweet month and a half later you receive a payout on whatever's left on the rego.

they shouldn't have even needed to take a look at your car, it's only required if you are re registering it.

"Vick" why take it to the city in particular Carlton. The vicroads city offices seem to have different rules. Come to think about it all staff @ vicroads seems to be providing different answers.

Written-off vehicle reforms in NSW

From 1 August 2011, all unregistered written-off vehicles that are eligible for registration need a Certificate of Compliance (http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/written_off_vehicles/repairers/index.html) from a NSW Fair Trading Licensed Repairer. The vehicle must also meet RTA inspection requirements before it can be registered in NSW.

Written-off vehicle laws aim to ensure vehicle safety and protect consumers. The laws also seek to reduce the risk of vehicle theft and car re-birthing in NSW.
A vehicle is 're-birthed' when parts from a stolen vehicle are used illegally to repair and re-register a written-off vehicle. Re-birthed vehicles are often poorly repaired and can be a safety risk.

What are the new laws?

NSW light vehicles written-off from 1 February 2011 are classified as statutory write-offs on the written-off vehicle register. This means that they cannot be repaired and re-registered (unless the vehicle meets certain requirements).
The new laws apply to all NSW light vehicles including trailers, caravans and motorcycles.
Written-off vehicles that have permission to be repaired must satisfy RTA inspection requirements before they can be re-registered.

there is many reasons as to why it could of been written off eg. stolen, flood damage.

I think VIC inspections are way more strict than NSW inspections.

really should have done them before the car was purchased. but what i'm suprised about is that they actually checked your car? or did you request for a check? what i would do, is book an appointment at another vicroads and tell them you only want to transfer the registration and see if they ask for a VIV inspection as I don't see any reason why they would if the car is currently registered.

They told me it's required because it's between the age of 10-15 years. I called vicroads before my inspection and she confirmed that no VIV is required, and when i get there it's a different story. I'll book another place in, any recommendations? Sunshine?

i did mine at sunshine without a problem, unfortunately i had to wait almost 4 weeks for an appointment there. My car is a 1997 model, and i did not have to go through that procedure, try different places, maybe even Sunbury.
