Hi guys just purchased a 97 Prelude Vtir Tiptronic, was fine for the first 1000ks, today when i went to drive her she was fine then just cruisng at 60 she started to free rev and i had no accelerator in D4 so i tired D3 which worked ok, then D3 did the same thing end up having to use 1st and 2nd gear which was kind of jerky. Then switched the car off and drove it later and it was fine??

Cheers,
Tony

Thanks for that sounds like a can of worms, what manual boxes are compatable & peddle boxes?

Did you buy it private or dealer? I advise you to return it asap.

Those transmissions are notorious for failing and you'll be up for big $ to fix it

Private, just a week ago, was fine before...was really happy with the car prior, handles fantastic and steering is great

money wise h22 manual gbox or if u want better performance you can have H 2 B swap.

so you have ur h22 engine mounted to a B series gearbox (best would be dc2r box)
but thats expensive and you will need this http://bisimoto.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=5_51

Sometimes it can be computer related so try resetting the ecu first and see if theres any difference.

If it does it again check for ecu error codes

Ok thanks for the info guys, will have a fiddle, know of anyone in SA who you would recommend to inspect/rebuild if necessary, that way can weigh up the cost of that to compare with manual conversion. Is the best way to reset ecu via disconnecting battery or is there a button on the ecu?

Cheers,
Tony

All F/H series manual boxes are compatible, that is excluding ATTS (different block) and S2000 boxes. H2B kits are designed for people doing H22 swaps where the car already has the B series drive train, not sure it is possible to fit one in a Prelude without some serious modification (custom axles, etc.). Seem to recall someone did a RWD conversion using a CRV transmission + H2B and they had to raise the bonnet (also the case for most Civic/Integra swaps), not sure what else they had to do. Fact is that a H2B conversion isn't half as practical for a Prelude as it is for say a Civic. RWD or AWD conversion you would be doing lots of custom fab work anyway so it makes more sense.

For a rebuild you should be looking at around $2,000 and yes the 5th gen auto boxes are notoriously unreliable, besides the manuals are just more fun to drive anyway. As for a manual conversion though, I'd imagine that if you wanted a manual, you would have just bought one, unless you got the auto really cheap or something?

Damn i forgot bout that it was for h swapped cars.. That would require a lot custom fab work, not worth it

Ok indeed, yes under 5k so not really bothered paying 2k, better paying that and fixing what i need then spending 10k and having someone claimed they've done it for it to break and end up costing me twice as much... just didnt expect it to happen like that, and if they are notorious for this then manual would be an option, bare in mind this is my daily, have a race car for weekends, the honda is the easiest and best car i have ever driven perfect for daily driving and some fun when needed :).

Thanks guys for all the input.

Cheers,
Tony

Well if you spend the money and get it rebuilt properly, then I would imagine that it will last longer than you have the car. No idea who the reputable re-builders are or if there are even any with experience in SA. Might want to try PreludeAustralia, could be there is someone there who has had an auto rebuilt in SA.

Could also look into a new box. The later (2000-2001, maybe also later 1999) autos were much less prone to failure.

have you checked your trans fluid level ?

Yes level is fine, going to do a flush etc and see how that goes, if no good then will do a rebuild with a later trans if i can find one lol

Looks like might be going 5spd manual, are the 1994 vtir boxes a good box?

you have the same problem i had weeks ago, bought the car with no signs of wear and tear on the gearbox only to figure the gears were slipping,i got my box rebuilt at hanny's performance, it was not money friendly either fetched me back almost 2.5k.

If you do go ahead and rebuild the box, drive it safely i guess and try not to thrash through the gears using tip tronic...as that what probably causes most these boxes to destroy themselves, also make sure you check up and regularly change your fluids/oils etc...goodluck mate.

Really damn same prob as mine just got quoted $1750 for second hand unit and $2900 for full rebuilt including installation warranty etc, so probably will go with this one as im going to be keeping the car for a while, I dont see a problem with the box if its done properly and ofcourse not driven like an idiot, but still should be able t shift up and down and have some fun without problems. Wil let you know how it all goes, cheers tony
