Hi, i am currently considering purchasing/looking for an s2000 soon, just want to get some advice off other s2k owners and their opinions. I am preferably looking for a silver w/red leather with a budget of around $21-25k. I am from Melbourne, Vic, but don't mind if the car is interstate, however this is an additional cost. I have been looking through whats available on carsales and it seems that the majority of S2k are over 100xxx.

what do you think of this s2k?

Thank you in advance :)

Hey Dude!

I am more than willing to help you with the purchase as i have purchased mine and has ended up costing me the same amount of buying to fixing it. Heaps of things to look out for. certain things like. Break pad wear, service history (who has serviced it most importantly and how often), has the car been lowered in the past? is there power on vibration from the rear? CV's could be going. the list can go on for ever.

what do you consider reasonable km for the price of around 21-22k?

first few things i've noticed is the gap from the hood to the front bumper. and also around the grill looks a bit weird. needs a better inspection upfront. Rear tow hook cover is off? why is that? has it been used for something? and also the driver seat on the right is worn/torn.. i wouldn't go interstate for that one. you'll find better ones here

kms for that price would be mid to low 100s i reckon. but really depends on the condition

The story you have here to learn is to pay a few extra dollars and save yourself the hassles and headaches, right ALPS?

nahh but srs. i knew nothing about buying a car when i bought my s2k. first car i ever bought private. before this i had a cherry red ford focus hatch that i bought smashed from the auctions and got it repaired. this was the first and only s2 i drove, i liked it so i bought it. little did i know it was fcuked. within the first month it cost me another 5 gs lol. its now been 10 months and i think anything that could go wrong with an S2 has happened to me, except maybe even more than what could happen, has happened to me.

S2000 Common problems:

1. Worn drive shafts - to test this, put the car on gear 4 when crusing at 50 km/hr and full throttle it. If you hear constant thumping, dependent on your rev it's most likely worn. Not too expensive to fix, and there are ways to prevent this from happening.
2. Worn roof, with holes, patches etc, rattling catchers - again, easy and not too expensive to fix.
3. Gearbox notchiness, make sure the shifting is more of a "pop into gear" than a "grind into gear" although s2k boxes are a bit "notchy".
4. Clutch master leaking - ensure the foot well under the pedal is dry as a bone and that when you step on the clutch it doesn't make unusual noises.
5. Ensure that the engine doesn't tick or rattle on idle under the bonnet - this could be the TCT which is also a common problem. Could be valve related too (adjustment)
6. Make sure your steering is straight and not tooo hard as the EPS system can get stupid sometimes.
7. Last but not least, ensure you don't have a check engine light lol

Other than that, the usual wear and tear stuff ie. Brakes/Pads/Rotors/Clutch/Tyres...

I sold my 99 Ap1 silver with red interior for 21,500 with the wheels/coilovers/intake + stock bits. It only had 105k on it. One will pop up eventually. Goodluck!

Peace.

i think i would go for JN7s to be honest. i haven't been in it for a drive but he's already got those little things that i wish i had on mine. I'm sure he'd be willing to arrange a time for you to check it out if you're happy to pay that extra few gs to know you've got a good buy. He lives near my area too so i wont mind having a look at it with you.
