Replacing K20a chain tensioner

Hi All,

I'm curious to find out what's involved in replacing the chain tensioner for a k20a

To gain access do I need remove the whole chain cover? Or can I just remove the small black cover shown in the picture below?

Based on the picture below, it looks to me the black cover is pretty located where the tensioner is. I'm assuming that's the picture of the small hatch to allow easier replacement of the tensioner.

Can anyone with some experience regarding tensioners confirm on this?

A very quick guide -Just the black cover - once done you need to back the load off the tensioner via slight pivot of the crank - then place the incl. Pin tool or thumb tack to hold the tensioner out. Remove , install new one and remove the pin. Reverse the procedure -

If you are using an aftermarket tensioner, make sure that the rod length is similar to how it is on the current tensioner before you put it in. Otherwise you'll put excessive pressure on the cam chain tensioner guides. With most tensioners, you can push the tensioner rod back in gently using a bench vise to prevent the rod from popping out when you undo the ratchet arm.
