google FN2R. I've sat in one, they seem quite nice. Bit heavy though - that's the issue most people have with this type-R

There is nothing wrong with the rear suspension. Ignore what Clarkson et al think, it's the same design as the Renault Sport clio and it's considered as one of the best handling hot hatches available. Ride is firm but extremely well dampened.
Regarding the rest of the FN2R, I've had mine for all of a week now and I'm yet to find anything I don't like about it. Perhaps the steering could do with more 'feel' but it's very direct and linear so it's very fun to throw around.
Also I think the extra weight is over emphasised, it's got a great chassis and carries it's wieght low so buggered if I can feel the difference between my mates EP3 and mine except maybe the EP3 feels a bit looser (less chassis rigidity maybe?).

yeh the live rear axle has been used successfully by citroen and peugeot n shit - they are heaps fun apparently
Like WATAJK suggested definately try to get a 09 or newer if you do look for one.
from then they come with LSD, Reverse parking sensor (rear vision is very limited), auto dimming rear mirror, interior accent light (very nice at night), USB/AUX inside the centre arm rest, revised VSA.
I've had mine for just over 1 year with minor mods, love the car, comfortable spacious interior good for 4 adults, interior is very neat and modern. Performance wise, prob out of the hot hatches i'd say its average. theres definately faster cars u can get for your money but, cost to own vs performance i reckon is very good (i get below 9L/100km peak hour traffic to/from work, insurance is cheap compare to turbos, servicing is reasonable too) Its a good compromise between comfort and performance.
Things to look out for is notchy/creaky clutch (free fix under warranty)
Possible rust on door frames
frayed gear boot (free fix under warranty too)
3rd gear syncro issues (heard a good gear box fluid will fix, honda is abit random with fixing this issue)
there's a tonne of info on mods and other issues on regarding the Fn2r at civinfo and fn2r.com.au
have a browse if your interested.

would getting a 2007 fn2r still be reasonable as stated above only 2009+ models comes with the the features that Fish had said " Like WATAJK suggested definately try to get a 09 or newer if you do look for one.

i just bought my uncles 07 fn2r. it is MORE than reasonable if youre a normal everyday driver.
who cares what they say about lsd or shit rear suspension...lsd you cant notice unless youre tracking it, and the live rear axle is very fun.
i took it for a cruise with 5 other fn2rs on saturday night at RNP...couldnt be happier!
