View Full Version : Losing engine oil !

My car seems to be losing quite a substantial amount of engine oil. It is a DC2. Got my service done at Revzone 1600km ago and i checked the dipstick yesterday and nearly half is gone. They fixed up a lil leak through my rocker cover before hand.

Before I took it there for service my engine oil was nearly empty! I suspected it was the drain plug not screwed on properly as there was engine oil around there.

When i drive normally there doesn't seem to be any smoke but during VTEC i can see that there's a bit of smoke behind me especially at night when peoples headlights shine at it. So does anyone know what I can do to pinpoint what this problem might be?

any other oil leaks? and sounds like ur burning a bit of oil, could be piston rings or valve steam seals?

Not that I can see...

Any way that I can tell if it's either one of the problems you mentioned. I believe I need to do a leak down compression test for the rings?

happen to know what colour smoke it is? im assuming blue which is burning oil. my car blows alot of that lol

I don't think i've seen blue smoke from my car...
When it's cold it's white and when VTEC it's black which I think is pretty normal... I might let it idle a bit today and observe the smoke. What else to look out for?

do a compression leak down test,
might just need a new PCV valve

use thicker oil

what are you putting in it now?

What is a PCV valve? Is that what Lukey's talking about?

Currently running OEM engine oil. Not the fully synthetic one, I believe it's 10-30...

pcv valve is a black small thing that has 2 hoses attached to it. usually located around IM.
one goes to block, other goes to airbox piping/im.

what b18 is it? c2, c7 or b2 engine?
pcv valve might be located differently.

lol thanks for the diagrams... that engine has a turbo btw... lol

My engines a B18C2, so how does this part affect losing engine oil? If this is the problem then it looks like an easy fix as it's just an off the shelf part.

How can I diagnose if this is the problem?

i dont think faulty pcv valve will make you lose that much oil.
eyeball your engine see if its leaking? front, back, oil pan etc.

take it out. shake it. if u can here a rattle then its fine. if u dont get a rattle, then its fd. a new one from mekong will cost 18 bucks or genuine from honda 70-80.

what oil are you using? i had a similar issue not long ago, was burning a lot. i had no smoke what so ever though. only on vtec ud get the black smoke from fuel burning.

if i was u, do a complete flush, depending on how many kms ur car has, i have 5w30 but if its got a bit then go for a 10w40.

do that and do a compression/leakdown test. that will tell whether its seals or rings. hopefully its nothing.

On a older car never use that oil flush additive, it does more harm than good. It pretty much tends to cause oil leaks.

So how did you fix your oil burning issue? Yeap might have to do a compression/leakdown test to see what the hells going on!

here's my DIY on PCV for B18C2:

I think the 10W-30 is the issue here.

how many Km's on your vti-r? I use 15W-50 in mine. generally a high revving car from 15 or so years ago should be using something with a high film strength like this. 10W-30 is low film strength and will break down under high strain on older machines.

keep in mind that just because it's OEM doesn't mean it's what you should be using.

yup never do that! shit is bad news lol

changed my pcv. had no rattle. i had no smoke from my car previous to changing it but when the new went in, i got a bit of smoke but after a few mins, never came back.

put new oil in and its been fine ever since.

Im using castrol edge sport 5w30 atm in my r.

Ahh ok in that case best I better do a compression/leakdown test. Any competent person can do it?

I won't name the mechanic but I asked for a compression test to be done on another car before buying it. He totally killed the car by doing a compression test manually. The car wouldn't start afterwards... LOL

^ how did he manage that lol? flood the engine by not taking the fuse for the fuel pump out?

NightKids

Yes how did you know? He did flood the engine!

Apparently all the spark plugs & that were gone. Poor guy... cause I said I wasn't interested in the car after this happened.

haha thought so. thats the only way u could possibly screw a simple compression test up.
