Alright, Got myself a type r integra. Drove it and the Third gear was feeling a tad weak when i was punching it (Just the crunch of a Synchro on its way out).

Options:

1. Replacing 3 & 4th gear synchro with Synchrotech's product (Carbon lined Synchro)
2. Replacing 1st,2nd,3rd,4th,5th gear synchro's with Synchrotech's product (Carbon lined Synchro)

Below is the description of what the Carbon-Lined synchro's achieve.

#
New Carbon fiber lining – A full carbon lining instead of just a coating.
#
Stronger Brass body - The Brass body has been upgraded to a stronger Japanese Brass composition
#
Improved lock angle - The lock angle has been changed to aid in higher RPM shifts
#
More surface contact - The inner carbon ridges have twice the surface contact (like putting bigger brakes on the gear)

Can anyone back this up for me, good product or one you wouldn't spend 2 minutes looking at?

im just wondering about why do you need carbon lined synchros?
most of the wear on synchros are on the engagement teeth and it's still brass on those carbon synchros.

your option 1 is probably not just synchros but you might also need synchro sleeve, hub and 3rd or 4th gear itself.
best to open the box and see where the damage is.

i think EG30 had shifting issue and he only replaced the synchros he didn't replace the sleeve and hub too, problem came back after a while.
he should be able to confirm.

Just an option I found and what I was reading said the carbon lined synchros are the best lol.. Needing other options if there is any one out there

I'll look into replacing all of the other parts going with the gears after I open it up I guess

i had the exact issue as u. exactly what mocchi said. i replaced all the parts he listed :3rd n 4th gear synchro, synchro sleeve, hub and 3rd or 4th gear, bearings n fluids.

now the rest of my box was good but i stuck with oem. thats my reccomendation.

theres someone selling the synchros for 250 in the marketplace i think. thats a good start.

Thank you for this, so do you recommend replacing all of the above or just begin with replacing the synchros? Then replace the hub If it needs it later

nope. if your gear is crunching, chances are the rest of the parts gonna need replacing.

put it this way mang. youve got a brand new synchro rubbing and grinding on some old beat up parts. its gonna wear alot quicker and youll have to fork out more.

better off doin all whilst the box is out. your gbox will feel brand new and ull be glad u did everything.

Change the complete hub + hub sleeve selector + synro. This will ensure the problem wont occur.

Alright got it! Appreciate the help fellas so next step is just go with all oem parts or is there a decent company whom makes good synchros

You guys think it is necessary to replace other gears also even if they arnt crunching (do gears tend to blow out one after the other)

Sweet, I guess that will work lol it isnt like me to have a punt in 5th gear or reverse for that matter so I like the sounds of 1-4th gear synchro and hub/gear rebuild

I assume this is for a DC2R?
I'm keen to change all this on my DC5R as well, would you mind sharing where you'll be obtaining the parts from?

Synchro tech very convienient one stop shop to get most parts you need for rebuilds.

Not a bad idea to also buy the countershaft needle bearing, countershaft hex nut, diff bearing and mainshaft distance collar on top of your purchase, saving having to pay rrp + leadtime at your honda dealer if you find out you need those parts in a hurry. David Henson very knowledgable and prompt to reply; if the part is not listed just enquire he can source almost anything incl aftermarket FD and gears eg 4.9FD and taller 3.08 1st gear for your dc2r.

Need to be extra careful when installing the carbon synchros as they can be fragile during install ie can chip off at the edges.

The latest full carbon synchros ( carbon coated brass synchros were earlier design still and now obsolete ) are the version 2, version 1 had bigger blocks and version 2 small blocks with stronger bonding to the brass rings beneath. Version 1 phased now by now, but in my case I had a mixture of both when I bought mine few mths back.

Just to Sum this thread up I have went with this combo:

3rd-4th gear Hub, Spring & Sleeve along with a set of 1,2,3,4,5th gear Synchros

+ Stage 1 Excedy heavy duty clutch kit OEM replacement (organic)

I am hoping my box feels wicked after the install! Now to find a reputable gearbox conditioner in SYDNEY

What GB oil do you guys recommend, any one had awesome oil which seriously prevented future issues?

@ EG30, Read your post a little to late might not be able to cram the additional bearings and hex nut in with my parcel, are these parts recommended for piece of mind or are the oem ones known to fk out on me? :D

Installed and feeling great just like OEM, the third gear seating was rebuilt and is still needing to wear in & can feel strong to engage the gear even tho it has no troubles engaging

Recommending BYP & HRC automotive in wetherill park Sydney for any automotive job big or small!

Installed all of my parts within 7 hours!!!!! Other places wanted to take 2-3 days and don't get me started on the over priced BS from other workshops

These are great -- Carbon lined just like the OEM K Series. rebuilt the box myself, its not that hard, recommend giving it a go if you have access to tools and are a little patient. Do all the bearings at the same time :)
