I make money with cars the following ways:

- As a dent doctor repairing dents
- Installing various ICE components

Also know a couple of people that buy cars cheap, do the necessary repairs in their garage, get a roadworthy and transfer done and make a little extra $$$ on the side selling them.

None of these are easy to do though.

Car dealers buy their cars either from the Wholesale section at Manheim's (not available to the public), or direct from a car wholesaler. Car wholesalers usually buy car's from big Dealerships as trade ins, finance companies where people default, or other car dealers that can't sell the cars. Couple other ways, but those are the most common that car dealers tell me.

You can re-register car's that have been written off, but only as a repairable write off (at least here in VIC). Then you'd have to take the car for a VIV inspection, before registering.

Gumtree + ebay is a good source for cheap cars, but the best is good old fashioned sellers who park 'em on the front lawn.

Go to the auctions and buy a wreck of make and model which is in demand for parts. I.e., something like a s15 or dc2r. Dump it in your backyard and strip on weekends. Sell off parts for profit and learn a hell of alot about cars in the meantime. A few years ago I made 12k out of parts from an s15 which as a whole would have only fetched 5 or 6k max at an auction. Maybe wouldn't make so much nowadays, but worth some thought :)

you'd be amazed at how cheap people sell cars with blown head gaskets because they think it's the end of the line for that engine. I've seen 180sx's here in ACT selling for $800-$1000 with things like resprays, intercoolers, turbo upgrades etc. but have a blown head gasket.

By DIY'ing it you only pay for the gasket/coolant/oil/possibly a head resurface pretty much and you could resell for WAY more than you payed initially. just need to have the tools and money to start off.

it's an idea anyway.

I'm 21, I had $3,000 at one point and wanted to turn it into more.

I went to my local motor auctions and I brought a car that was cheap, N15 Pulsar, I replaced the worn carpet brought it for $2,900, sold it for $4,200.

Brought a cressida for $2,000, sold it for $4400.

Paid $800 for an R31 skyline, sold it for $1,300.

All these cars were physically and mechanically in the same condition when I sold them as when I brought them.

I just drove them around for the time I owned them.
