View Full Version : Short shifter damaging synchros in eg civic?

Hi guys, I'm looking at buying a short shifter for my eg. The ad says reduce shift distance by up to 40%, so max 40%. Can installing this wear out/damage any aspects of the gearbox?

opinions are varied.

the main issue with them is that when you want to shift "quick" with the short shifter, you end up slamming it in when u dont need to abuse it as much cause therse less distance travelled.

If you make ur shifts clean and smooth and not go all Brian Earl Spilner on it, then it should be ok lol.

in the end its up to you but just know that if ur gonna be a bit rough with her, maybe dont get it cause ull end up needed to do a gb rebuild.

So if i get one don't shift violently? With nice smooth shifts no damage will be done to gbox?

ok so put it this way:

the synchro wear occurs cause they suck at driving and don't time the clutch correctly, therefore placing increased stress & wear on all effected components.

obviously if ur gonna shift smooth and slow its not going to be an issue. afaik that is. but whats the point of slow smooth shifts, whole point of it is for fast shifting.

best advice: shift fast with ur current setup. that way theres no risk of ur box needing to be recod.

How does a short shifter look nicer

And why would you buy one only to granny shift, kind of defeats the purpose

get a short shifter.. and longer gear stick..

so the throw is shorter

and also gearknobs closer to the steering wheel

meaning more time with both hands on the steering wheel

short shifter just changes the feel, not the actual shifting of the syncro speeds, so if u slam the gears in, than ur gonna damage the box one way or another... The gear box can only change gears as fast as what the syncros can do

And also remember, with eg/ek, if u install a short shifter, it might hit the top of the exhaust piping, so ur gonna have to extend the hangers so it sits lower, but depends how long the bottom part of the shifter sits really....

It looks nice when it protrudes physically less from the console IMO

Didnt read posts but dont get one man. I hate short shifters with a passion.
Makes daily driving a bitch !

Is there such a thing as a shifter with standard shift distance but just physically shorter?

chop your shifter to sit lower .

lilthug
20-10-2011, 05:00 PM
^^ chop and re-thread so u can still screw on gearknob

crobaa

Was thinking that today actually, I just want same looking length that's on newer cars. It looks like it needs to be milled down though as its too thick to tap down low?

Dont chop mang ! gives you a better driving feel cos its not so hard to reach. ever driven a supra ? Fark the shifter that comes factory is waaay too short. Feels shit to down shift during some spirited driving

crobaa
20-10-2011, 08:02 PM
Yeah I know. Best driving feel is ideally like twice as long as standard one so chopping isn't going to help. It's just so un attractive now. I have to think about it some more now I have all the info

there is no definite,

i fitted the buddyclub shortshifter on my old gearbox,

it took time to get use to, at first i was missing gears. so make sure you get the hang of it before you go on your racespec drive

my suggestion is stick with oem. it will feel much firmer to shift and your chances to damage stuff is less

crobaa

How about getting a firmer shift feel without changing shift distance? At the moment, even when it's in gear I can wobble it side to side a fair bit. I already installed energy suspension shifter bushes

If your not going to give a useful response just piss off man. It's not an unreasonable request to want my gearbox to feel like a new car.

I think my response was completely relevant.

new feel = new car.

buy a ferrari with H gate shift....

If its impossible to fix just say so. No need to be a dickhead about it. I thought there may have been a way to reduce slop in the shifter.

first 20 posts had so much information, but you still complaining & bitchin, I just got sick of helping the normal way....

sounds like you'll never be happy.

how good do you want your shift feel to get....

why don't you drive other honda's to find out how they feel.

why don't you pm a few people with nice builds on here, ask if you can feel their shift feel to compare.

doesn't take genius.....

The first 20 posts didn't relate to play in the shifter at all. Its a bit forward to pm ransoms on the Internet to feel their shifter. I'm sure it wasn't this sloppy when new and I'd assume there's a component somewhere that can be replaced to improve the feel. I don't recall complaining or bitching at all either. Not once have I shown attiutude at all until you began to be a dick. I just have unanswered questions and am looking for info. If you don't know it, keep out.

bill, to reduce shifter play use aftermarket bushing on shift linkage.
no other way.

So even when a dc2r was new it has this large amount of play in the shifter? Most post 2000 model cars I've driven felt pretty solid & I have dc2r running gear. In saying that, I have never driven a brand new or relatively new dc2r so I don't have a comparison.

What shift linkages are you using? Type R ones or your old EG ones?

crobaa
21-10-2011, 12:13 PM
Type r

Glocker
21-10-2011, 12:20 PM
Type r

That's weird, mine has pretty precise shifting; how exactly do you define 'slop'? In my mind sloppy gearboxes are like the Commodore's manual box, especially from 2nd to 3rd u can't tell whether it's in third or 5th

I mean, once it's in gear it can probably move 20mm left and right still. I very rarely select the wrong gear though.

What do you think it could be? Ideally I would like an underbody shot of a dc2r for comparrison, anybody happen to have one?

Think of how the gear stick is connected to the Gearbox, do you really think it is that solid to only provide 1mm movement either way max?

imagine from the GB to the gear stick, it's solid steel, you would still be able to move it, let alone it having multiple pivot points.

Ok just for you, I've walked out to my car, put it in gear and see if it's made a 2 cm movement side to side or not. Mine's a B18C2 box with type r shift linkages and a short shifter, old arse bushings. And the answer is nope, it's 1cm at MOST.

So maybe it's the gearbox that's like that like Bludger said. I dunno I haven't riffed through a Type R box before.

It's not as simple as that, it's the box, age, everything, it allplays a part, To ME, it sounds like he is just being too anal, buy autobox or a new car.

not likely but your select return spring might be worn.
have to open gearbox to check.
