hey guys, i have owned my s2000 for few years now and been up and down with common problems that i have fixed, now another noise has come up. whilst driving 1st and 2nd gear has a slight winding like a super charger (not as loud as one) but you can hear it winding up and then 3rd or 4th there is no noise. i never thrash the car always drive it normally i hardly vtec it anywhere these days. could it be needing new bearings or diff, the noise is coming from the rear for sure though. its not as loud but you can hear it.

i would take it to your mechanic/driveline specialist and get them to confirm. ideas people throw up on forums can either help you, or have you chasing your tail forever in a day and by the sound of this one, i would get a professional to confirm

yeah, i know what you mean its just i want a ball park of an idea if anyone has had the problem before so i dont go to the mechanic an just get ripped. im trying to fix the car for a car with no problems reason being im putting it up for sale soon and dont want the new owner stuck with it !

Jack up your car and accelarate to the point where you hear the noise, so that you're sure its your diff and not something else. This would b my first approach.

I hav a similar noise in first and second below 3k revs. I presume its normal as ive got very low ks on car. And can only hear it then because its clouded by road noise and engine noise once im up to speed in 3rd. I think mines just standard diff noise.

I think I might have had a similar sound, my gearbox sounded like straight cut gears LOL whines up and up it's awesome until I lost 6th gear on the track haha. Mine did it in all gears but so I'm not sure maybe just flush out your fluids and see how it goes make sure no chunks come out.

Not sure what the problem was but I've got a new gearbox and the sound has gone.

But yes as s2kjn said jack it up and drive it see if the sound is there.

Mine also, only in first though.. I flushed out the fluids, and there where no chunks. So i just turn the stereo up abit and problem solved..

i found out the problem could be needing a diff rebuild, so im out on the prowl for a second hand diff if not one thats been rebuilt and its a shame that aus had one and it sold!.

not sure if this helps.. when i had my s2000, there was no noise in the diff until i changed oil. when its cold, it would whine until the oil gets warm. but this was in all gears. wasn't sure if it was normal or not though lol

it did have a 4.7FD though

gotta take the car to the mechanic and most probrably rebuild the diff although they have to open it up first so see how i go anybody know good shops they can refer for the diff rebuild?

I think its my diff too, because when i turn i can hear light clunking or ticking when im turning in or out of gear..

When my diff was on it's way out I thought it was a problem with the transmission. Even rebuilt the transmission secondary before finding out the diff was stuffed. The sound can be deceptive.

These guys did mine:

Took a while but then I was having some engineering done too.

Couldn't really say as I supplied crown and pinion and had some beefy engineering done. I'll let them quote.
