View Full Version : Is parking on dirt bad for tyres?

My car lives on dirt down the side of my house, and I was wondering if this could, over time, lead to tyre degradation? As I work away from home, the car could sometimes sit for over a week without being moved.

I'm worried because I have recently purchased some nice soft rubber (140 treadwear) and I don't want them destroyed. UV exposure is not an issue because the car is covered.

Thanks

if you are worried about the tyres, just get 4 pieces of wood, and put them under the wheels. Also if you park the car for 1 week, disconnect the battery terminals.

Bit time consuming to get pieces of wood placed every time you park?

If you are going to be away for longer than 2wks,

i would recommend emptying your Fuel tank and store it in a large capacity container.

failing to do so, will cause the engine to run like crap and possibly requiring an injector clean due to the old/expired fuel/ residue.

i believe this is also stated in the Honda's Service Manual.

if he park on the same place everytime, so it is not a problem at all. Even, it is not gonna take him more than 1-2 mins.

Exactly, just find some large sheets of MDF or similar and put them on the ground where you usually park!
And as far as disconnecting your battery/draining your fuel tank.. That is rediculous!
It is not a 2stroke. Regular fuel has a LONG shelf life, a high performance engine will notice old fuel moreso than a regular car anyway.. You will be perfectly fine in your Integra.

Seriously!? Holy crap - ignore this completely man.
If anything you'd want to fill the tank full so as to remove airpockets that could cause rust. Drain abit of fuel to let some water that may have accumulated.
2 weeks is nothing - I'd be doing this only if leaving the car for more than a couple of months.

The danger with soft tyres on dirt is that little worms will create little holes in the tyres reducing their durability...NOT.

Its fine parking on dirt...Its grass i'd be worried about because grass gives off moisture and oxygen which could encourage rust.

i left my car in garage for 6 weeks, it starts fine and goes fine after i reconnect battery.
petrol do build sludge/residue when left unused but we're talking months. not weeks for sure.

Which if you add some fuel stabiliser should be fine.

If the car sits for just 1-2 weeks, your 140 treadwear tyres will be fine. I do the same and I also have 140 treadwear tyres.

If youre leaving it over 1 week and concerned, invest in a dehumidifying chamber for peace of mind.Nothing is too good for your Honda remember

Haha cheers for the feedback. Not too worried about the fuel - I sold some 4 month old ultimate to some bloke who, knowing full well how old it was, used it in his car and apparently had no issues.

I was just worried there might be something in the dirt which could affect my tyres. If there is a slight possibility they would be worse off on dirt vs say concrete, then I'll be putting down some pavers/digging in some rocks

Just make sure your tyres are at the right pressure, maybe a couple of psi more.

Put your car in those humidifier tents.

I think you should take all 4 wheels off, sit your car on blocks, so theres no flat spots on the tyres, store the tyres inside your bedroom where it's around 20-23 degrees...
This way, no one can steal your car too.

You should drain your tank completely, remove it, clean it, reinstall it.

Attach a battery trickle charger to the car, so the car has constant current so rust on the body parts won't form...

I'm glad you asked this question because this is 100% my situation with my CRX. Dirt, Toyo R1R's, driven maybe twice every three weeks.

Emptying petrol is BS. It's a pressurised system and yes the fuel will eventually go 'stale' but it takes much longer than one eff'ing week lol. Jack stands, yeah maybe if it's gonna be a month or more, but you're usually safe for 6-8 weeks more or less.

Just make sure your tyres have good pressure when you drive again. Disconnect the battery if it's old (I used to have problems with this) but once a week is fine still.

dirt wont effect ur tires over a week period lol.... as long as u have good tire pressure, nothing will come out of it parking on dirt. You see farm vehicles always parked on dirt... i dont see why any vehicles cant do the same... .rubber is rubber

BUT is it?... oils ain't oils...

When u start talking like that, its different lol

Yes there are different tire compound, construction methods, wear rating etc etc, but as far as parking on dirt, in an all weather situation, the rubber wont be worn away simply like that, it takes a long long time for rubber to break down. Though im no engineer when it comes to tire construction and design, i do know for a fact that it takes alot more than dirt to damage a tire :)
