anyone tried it before? initially had concerns about the gas in them and running current through it but I figure it's probably an inert gas cause it'd be bad news if you had a stack and it punctured and there was a fire going on :p

will be performing it later today, just wondering whether anyone had any input

its not flammable but its under extreme pressure.....that in itself is the issue. Also shocks generally are gas/oil combos - with a vent of sorts on top to displace air around the piston and top seals etc. Issue in a electrical coating dip ? Perhaps ?

well I've been recommend a molasses dipping, but we'll see
I can get most of the rust off with a file but just can't get some hard to reach places
I won't be dumping the entire shock in, just as high as the rust goes(probably just above the shock 'cup')

i wouldnt worry dude ! But since you are playing with water and live power - BE CAREFUL.
If its bubbled rust , this process wont do anything - it will have to be cut back sanded and sealed. Dont forget to seal where the rust is removed otherwise it will come straight back.

BTW you are doing it yourself IE http://www.instructables.com/id/Electrolytic-Rust-Removal-aka-Magic/ ?

yeah I've got lots of experience with electricity to know to do things safely :)

yeah I'm going to file off what 'heavy' rust I can and rely on the process to help with the rest, will be completely stripping the shock of paint and respraying it hence wanting to get it as clean as I can

yep that's correct ben, big paint bucket + water and baking soda + anode and a 12v15a supply handy

Why didnt you use a rust neutralizer and repaint?

Are you gonna wear a labcoat when you do it?

We need pics

I'll get some of this (http://americanidol2006blog.blogspot.com/2007/07/kari-byron-fhm-magazine-pictures.html) happening

in all seriousness though ben has aroused some initial concerns I had so I'll see how I go(have to see where I can find some molasses first) before I go ahead
