View Full Version : Forged B16a2?

Hey guys, I am thinking about forging my B16a2 with CP pistons and eagle rods because one of my pistons are cracked. As my mechanic told me I have to hone my block down to fit the forged pistons which is the exact same sizes to the OEM pistons(81 mm) is that true? is it better to go oversized bore? and if I were to get the pistons compression ratio 10.5:1 would I need to retune my car cause the standard one is 10.2:1 which is not much of a difference so I'm guessing I do not need to retune it. I'm not planning to turbo the car or anything though so yeah can you guys give me suggestions of what I should do? :) Thankss

are you doing anything else ? or just wanna put forgies in? if the case dont really see the point

Higher compression = higher chance of pinging detonation. But your stock ECU should adapt to it with the right timing. To get the most out of it though better get it tuned.

Yeah just putting forgies in. Cause I checked OEM pistons and they cost roughly about $250 per each piston from Honda and forged pistons cost about 800 for a set including eagle rods which made me think that if I were to rebuild might as well do it good unless if someone knows another place which sells OEM pistons for cheap =/

A mechanic told me when ever I wanna change pistons to new pistons, I may have problems with cylinders, due to the heat the sleeves and pistons will not be oval.So i have to take the Bottom and machine the cylinders. Anybody can confirm if it's possible to change to new piston with out taking bottom end out.

Well yeah depending how bad it is I guess but my mechanic said if its forged pistons then the bottom end must be honed and if its just standard OEM pistons its alright. Not sure if its true can anyone clarify this?

if you didn't machine it, you're doing a half arsed job.

building a motor to fail.

but yes, you can put new rings in. it will work.

without taking bottom end out of the car?
yes possible but 10x the effort.

so much easier when engine is on stand and you can turn it around to fit conrod cap, measure end gap, let engine oil drip on drain pan etc.

not to mention oil drip gonna be a real pain.

why dont you go rs machines bit more compression is always better. great oem quality piston

So if i want to change just the piston rings, so it is allright to do it, but to change the pistons to new one, it's better to take it out.

Changing pistons or rings only is exactly the same thing.

2 pistons rings are bad, so i want to change rings, I do not want to take the engine out. I want to take the head out and pop the piston from under and change the rings to a new rings and keep the old pistons. Will that be a problem?
I also was thinking to get higher compression pistons with ring, since I will be taking the pistons out, but the problem is the sleeve will have different shape than the new piston, so i am worried of doing that.

read service manual. not a penis in this world would know.
you gotta buy micrometer that reads 0.0001" and check piston skirt diameter if they're still within service limit.
then you need dial bore gauge to measure bore diameter if they're elongated or not.

stop thinking and do it.

everyone here can say "ey yea bro that's fine slap it in"
but is it really?

Like I already said brother, it's always ideal to bet it machined.

But

It will work if you just change the rings.

Why bother with higher compression pistons if you're doing a half arsed job?
If it is significantly higher compression, you will have to compensate with better fuel, retard the timing and alter the tune.

Still it's only sealed with un machined block & new rings.

Not very ideal.

Just change the rings

OR

take the engine out, do it properly.

Thanks for the information, I was thinking to drive it until the engine dies. But still if i want to get another engine, it could be fu*ked up. So If i wanna do it i will do it once and do it perfect. Atm it burning a lil bit of oil not something serious, so i used thicker oil and working good.
Btw Why you two use same picture ? I always think i am talking to the same guy :|

Ideally get the block out and have it and the pistons inspected by somebody who can tell the difference. A food engine builder will tell you of you need new pistons or of the block needs machining/honing etc

mocchi has that engine.

Delorean.........

runs on food scraps

youre fkd now dougie. welcome new meme.

Food engine engine builder.

can he build a kfc k20a?

i don't even...

Op have you considered just replacing the b16 with a b18c2? they're cheap as fuk, more potential for power. Im sure you've already considered this, just sayin' if you haven't already.

Just rebuild the entire bottom end.

peace of mind and you know that its done right and no shortcuts.

engine should last longer - if done right.

go the lower comp ratio - rather than the high comp. then slap on a GT3540R snail and barp barp barp barp whooppppisshh!! LOLOLO

yeah I already considered b18c2 but I just love the b16a's raw crossover, so I was thinking about either forging, rebuilding or buying another engine, LOL @ IV73CI hahaha! too bad thats to expensive :(

Power/ torque > sound ...... Nomsaying ?

op another option would be- take that b16 head that you've already got and slap it on a b20. Would be like diving whole new car in terms of power/ torque (you'd then lmzo at the thought of a b16). Would be a lot cheaper than building a b16 as well and would have a lot more potential. Plus- it's not as if it wouldn't sound good lol.

tru ... but you will be a happy b16a turbo owner... done correctly .. if all well 400+hp ..whoa!

my mates gold civic is exactly that ..i fink he has 500+hp atw .. its one crazy b16 ..from last time i heard..dunno if its still a b16a under the hood.

im aiming to snail my b16a .full rebuild maybe with a stroker to 1.8L dunno ..will depends on the budget.. :P
