i was just wondering when the best time to change gears was...and how to change gears...

i was told to just kick da clutch as fast as i could changing gears at the same time would b the fastest...

sorry if its a stupid question...

This is the best way mate:
1. Press on da clutch (left pedal)
2. Put into apropriate gear (the stick thingy)
3. Unpress the clutch
4. Press on gas when desired

Thank you, for more super dooper racing techneques, dont hesitate to ask.

honestly if a guy is asking a question why do you have to be smartasses?
he's asking a legit question
i myself do not know the answer but ive asked questions before and people would rather try to be "funny" than helpful.

take a hint......its not that funny

this forum is starting to look like the honda tech forum where members treat the newcomers like sh!t........its a bit disappointing

quangsta : i did a little search and i think this thread may hold an answer

cmon guys, SHarik was just playin, I don't think any offence was meant. :)

Quangsta, i wouldn't recommend u "kick the clutch" as hard as you can. This can usually mean you're rushing ur shift, and face the possibility of misshifting and grinding ur gears. Funnily enough, I recommend you follow the very basic technique of just shifting normally and cleanly, and working up to the fast shift as you get more comfortable.

As you're approaching your rev shift target, make sure your hand is comfortable on your shifter, and your left foot well positioned on your clutch pedal, not allowing room for error by slipping off the pedal and grinding gears.

Hope that helps.

WTH does "kick the clutch" mean?

Sorry I'm kinder lost  Whats wrong with changing gears normally? Or is this more of a techniqual question for racing or something?

yeh lol, wats wrong with regular shifting, i read about ppl not clutching wen they shift, you gotta get timing totally perfect though, screw that :P

...would b the fastest...

i got the impression he was talking about racing techniques.

Im with joneblaze, dont rush you're shift. Slowly work you're way up, and get faster and faster. I dont think you can start kicking the clutch in and out and getting the shifts perfect without slowly getting better with practice.

hey guys in regards to shifting and clutching and all that shit. do you guys press ya clutch all the way in and then shift?.. Cause when i shift, I can shift just by gently tapping the clutch pedal so the time between shift is reduce.. Has anyone done this before? Cause usually when u clutch people press it all the way down.. but you dont need to as you only need to disengage the clutch friction point then shift. so instead of pressing it all the way down.. i just tap the bitch and shift. works fine... Anyone.?

Oh and yeh. This forum is begining to be a smart ass forum. Dont know why newbies get flamed and shiet.

true that quangsta asked a legit question, but its also quite evident that sharik was only messin bout...
keep it real peeps, and a light hearted mind, we're all mates in ere...
in regards to ya question quangsta, id have to agree with joneblaze - start slow and work ur way up quicker as u progress. there are so many diff ways of shiftin that we could b ere listin em all til next yr :P
jst shift normally and try different variations by urself, then stick to sumthin that ur comfortable with and thats effective!

thanks for the help i guess ill just shift normally and just work my way faster from der...
guess everyone should b reminded that we all have to start somewhere...

I am with what the majority have said here, keep practicing your shifting till you find it to flow quicker. Also very important is to make sure you shift at the right rpm and keep the car in high revs as this is where the majority of torque from our little NA engines comes from. Peace.

i do it everytime i change gears. its like automatated in my leg to press just a little when shifting.

its faster and doesnt use alot of muscle power from the leg!! eheh(cuz im so lazy)

wat is the right rpm???? is der an exact amount i should b aiming for or is it diff for all cars??

As for Rpm's it depends if u want a smooth n easy ride or max power all the time, there is already another thread about this.

I dont push my clutch all the way down, just till it disengages, but i only doing this when im not driving slow, if ya get my drift. Other than that i just press alll the way down and try to get the smoothest possible transition in gears, especially in my car....f***ing top eninge mount.

personally i do not think there is any one way to describe this mechanical process called "changing gears" . There is too many varibles ( such as situation , driver technique , ability blah blah) to give a definite answer.

My answer is - practice makes perfect :)

changing gears without clutch is easy with a Datsun 120y.
i had 1 ages ago and it was very easy to change it without the clutch :P
i guess it was a very worn gearbox

Or in a Datsun 180B! LOL

I drove my Mates car (96 VTIR 16CTEG) at Calder like a few months ago, and managed a 14.9 ET we setup the Vtec to engage at 4500 Rpm (Apexi VAFC) and the way I lauched was with the handbrake up and in first gear with the clutch just engaging, just like stalling it at the starting line (burns the clutch a bit thogh) and when the christmas tree turned green I just let go of the Handbrake and the clutch to make it launch just between 4500 and 5000 Rpm, as far as I remember we had set the shiftlight before 7000 rpm I think don't remember! but it seemed to be a great shifting point, I had only that one single run due to there not being enough time for me to keep having runs but I rekon if I did I would have gotten a mid 14 with no problems.

but like most people will tell you keep on having some practice and you will improve.

From that day on my mate said to me I should race his car down the Track every meet at Calder, I guess just like a Owner/Driver kind of thing.

Flatshift......if you can afford a new gearbox.

Really I didnt fully flat shift, I shifted so quick that it sounds like it, well so I have been told!

It's like changing Gears without taking your foot of the Gas pedal!

turtleEK1
10-04-2005, 09:29 PM
honda gearbox's are one of the easiest to flatshift... but i dislike doing it for it leaves room for error... i drive with a button clutch so shifting is reasonably quick anyway... tho only problem is shifting from first to second i crunch every so often... think its a lazy synchro or the change of gearbox oil?

oh yeah, i agree with everyone that practice makes perfect. one thing is to try and be kinda relaxed with the shifting, don't go slamming or thrashing into gears, should be just a flick of the fingers or wrist.

my suggestion is to shift just before you hit rev limit.. ive heard some ppl about 500 rpm under redline...?? apparently your hitting maximum power then.??? dunno..just push the thing as hard as it goes and let instinct do the rest lol...use the force and listen to that motor scream.

a short shifter would definately help!!

JDM.Power
11-04-2005, 05:54 PM
wells i didnt read all through the pages etc.
by my point of view ..just shift on a medium pace...shiftin 2 fast myt wreck your gearbox.

an other thing im gonna say is..practice practice! :P makes perfect

i think i remeber someone told me once, that its not about how fast ure hand moves, its about how fast you're foot moves...

keep that in mind?

My dc2 vtir likes to red line the first two gears and change at 7000-8000 for the rest ^.~ have a try of that

max peak power is around 800rpm before limiter (don't quote me on this)
but you'll have a peak powerband ~1000rpm +/- limiter

dunno if thats made any sense :p

if i'm hammering the car out, i'll change just before limiter as BOOSTD said :)

hey quang, you're asking about when the right time to change gears when drag racing right? or normal street driving?... i'm guessing its the first but you need to be abit more clearer :)

integrity
13-04-2005, 09:34 PM
yeah man practice is it !!!
you are the owner of your car so you would be the only one to know how it works perfectly ..
practice heaps (without trying to kill the clutch) and youll be fine ..
just learn to watch your revs as they come find the best timing and quickly kick the clutch , slap it into gear while releasing as fast as possible and accelerate as soon as ur gears catch ... sounds complicated but it really isnt

Kawasaki
13-04-2005, 09:49 PM
I do what boost does, push the clutch in but not all the way and I sorta rest my foot on the accel. As soon as I start to let the clutch out the foot goes on the accel.. tip: plz, time it right :D

drag racing....like earlier in the post someone mentioned that he set the shift light to go off at 7000rpm...i was just thinking isnt dat a lil too low???....

i agree take it slow and work up ur speed slowly, or if u dont car about ur car being tharashed and u want the fastest way. take off like normal and keep ur foot flat on the accellerator and pump the clutch while changing.have fun :honda:

19-04-2005, 11:29 AM
i tend to feel that if u change ur gears too low esp with Vtec, wen u hit 2nd gear, the car isnt in its powerband, there for its taking time to get back in to the power end of the engine.

say for ur Vti-r intregra, try changing it at 8.200 rpm and see where it kicks back to. if it doesnt sit above 6.000 rpm, it means ur changing to slow!
another way to know ur changing gears fast enough, is if uve got ur stockies on and u can chirp 3rds while puting it into 3rd gear!

franki
21-04-2005, 08:08 AM
yeh i agree with blew lude. u want to keep ur revs as close to vtec or in vtec if possible for optimum launch in each gear. by the way i was kidding about doing flat chats, they ruin ur g/box :honda:

Don't shift the gear fast. Your revs won't drop fast enough to take advantage. To do it fast, and avoid grinding and mis-shifts:
1) Floor
2) Let go of accelerator and press clutch
3) Shift confidently. Don't rush it, don't do it fast. Take your time. The next step will cover any slowness here
4) Press accelerator to the floor and let go of clutch at the SAME time. You must do it at the same time and let go of the clutch and press accelerator FAST. Doing it right will bring your rev above 6000rpm and chirp your wheels.
5) Repeat
6) ??????
7) Profit

Even with my Euro, I can land at above 5500rpm from 1-2 shift! You MUST chirp your wheels, otherwise there will be a lot of shock to your drivetrain.

yea best thing to do is just practice and test the limits of ur car
they r all differnt and ur style is differnt too :)
