Yokohama ADVAN (http://clixtrac.com/goto/?46768) sponsored the Skyline Australia Nationals this year. The event lasted two days with day 1 being a track day at Winton raceway. A few ADVAN Neova competitors trying to better their times on the Winton leader board.

Another two Neova competitors were out in the next session chasing each other down. John Packham in his purple S14 and new comer Brent in his White R33 GTST duelled it out over 2 sessions. John managed to smash 2 seconds off his PB but was still getting use to his new suspension setup, with further tweaks he is expecting to break into the 1:40:000 barriers.

Name: John Packham

What you do for a living:
IT infrastructure project manager. Physics educated but moved in to application development which enabled me to travel, now settled in Australia and working for HP implementing server/network solutions.

What's the story behind your car:
The daily driver, now 2nd track orientated car. If it doesn't attract attention all the better - a handy trait from my youth, if you've ever watched police car footage, you may have noticed a high proportion from the Greater Manchester Police. Works for compliance ticket avoidance as well and it sure beats sweeping glass shards out of the car, purchasing replacing audio components. I came to Australia and wanted a car, so instead of my normal front drive hot hatch, looked for simple rear drive platform with little/no electronics and settled on an early silvia. I wanted a bit more than spirited drives in the mountains so I joined a CAMS club, installed a fire extinguisher (hidden under the front seat) and hit the track. I've then improved things as the OEM components reached end of life but still like it to have rear seats to enable my little one to experience the noisy Nissan.

Why did you choose the Advan Neova tyre, what do you like about them most :
Wanted decent track rubber and looked at R type semi slicks but was concerned about heat cycles and wear from driving to the country tracks and the odd child run. Don’t want to fork out for a trailer at the minute or have to constantly swap tyres. Spotted forum entries in the USA talking of AD08 tyres producing faster times than any other street rubber so thought I'd best give them a go. It's the best high performance street rubber I've tried, period. They've done 10 track events this year, still loads of tread, holds up to the duration of my sprint events at full gas. No major street handicap. Only downside is that I'm having to install a bucket seat to keep me in the drivers seat
:-)

Current car mods :
Fire extinguisher. Whiteline front swaybar, excedy single plate clutch, DBA slotted rotors, pads(currently club racer), brake lines and fluid. Gel battery, Greddy FMIC and EBC, Walbro fuel pump, 3" full exhaust with hi flow cat. 2nd hand 17x8.5 TE37s, 235/45 AD08s, z32 AFM, intake and Pod, G2817R turbo, Poncam, cam gear, springs and rocker stopper, 740cc injectors, Nistune ECU. Cazman castor rods, BC ER coilovers and track orientated setup/alignment.

Future mods:
Seat install, removable harness bar, harness. 1.5 LSD, maybe pineapples. Bigger brakes (330mm). Then performance coils/spark plugs to allow slightly higher boost and tune for more power. And if it's still going, a cage when children can sit in the front and who wouldn’t like light weight aero panels. Kids n dads Kart

Current PB time:
1:43.47 (1:42.8 no NATSOFT)

Target time:
further +2sec reduction as I get used to new suspension setup

What do you think the secret is to getting a good lap time:
Read some theory, practice, think/review, experiment with braking limits, lines and corner gearing, repeat. What works for someone else may not work for you and your car.

A message to keen competitors who would like to join in :
Join the club community, ask questions, they don't want to laugh, they want to help you. Start off being safe, don't push your limits where there is no runoff until your ability/confidence has improved. I started with an extinguisher; the biggest improvements are in the driver at the beginning. Look to replace OEM parts that just don't like track time - search out track orientated brake pads/fluid and tyres such as AD08s – and don’t forget to enjoy yourself, we’re not doing this for payment, it’s for self-improvement and fun.
