I just realized i have many bottles of used fluids taking up space in the garage.

How do you guys get rid of them?

Theres a SITA waste facility at eastern creek a few minutes away from me but it says it only accepts sump oil for free at 'household quantities'. Whats exactly counts as household quantity?

Also where do i get rid of used coolant?

20l , or 4 normal oil containers (at 5l each). just drop em off , go pick up some more and come back or another day.
As for coolant - i use it on weeds

Cool thanks Ben

20L per day limit sounds good to me. Ill just bring a mate with me :)

Id dump my coolant on weeds too but my dog might lick it or something.

correct, its 20L here in Brisbane too. You have to empty it into a big vat yourself though. once or twice a year they have days where you can dump it for free instead of paying the $7

Take it to a mechanical workshop and just ask them to dispose it into there waste oil bin

If you only produce a small amount of used oil from vehicles , you can take it to your local used oil facility run by your local council or shire. Usually the facility will be located at the landfill, waste transfer station or works depot.
Some used oil facilities will also take your oil filters, oily rags, and plastic oil containers. Check this out when you next recycle your oil.

Also found this to be an interesting read.

in melbourne, the fixed dumping sites usually only accept motor oil.
for coolants and things like that, there will be a time where your municipal will arrange a quarterly or yearly toxic waste disposing.
should check with your nsw municipal waste sites.

household sites would probably be under 20-30L.
in my local waste dump, its free to dispose 30L of motor oil.
anything above 30L will be charged like 20cents per litre, cant remember exact price.

Do you have wooden fence posts? Pour your oil around the base of them.. It deters the termites!

As above post apparantly it preserves your wooden fences too, or as the other guy mentioned. Take it to your local mechanic if hes not stinge he'll take it off your hands free of charge.

i keep a 50ltr chemical container in the corner of my shed - each time it fills up i take it to the local rubbish tip and they swap it for another empty one

this usually lasts me a good 12months - if its only a one off go see ur local mechanic and im sure he would be happy to facilitate

old sump oil will preserve wooden fences and keep ants out of wooden fences and structures - a trick we used to use on our farm
but whatever u paint it on will turn black and stay black lol

Also quick question, does gearbox oil go off?

I found a 5L bottle of Castrol VMX from my civic like 2 years ago and theres more than half left, i dunno if i should give it to a mate to use or dispose it. Its been tightly sealed in a cool dark place this whole time.

Mineral oil does indeed have an expiry date.. Gearbox Oil is recommended to be changed every year in most cars (And that obviously includes it being used)
So if you've let it sit for 2 years and air-tight.. Maybe it's still good?
Gearbox Oil isn't that pricey, i'd personally just throw it out (On mah fencepostssss)
