hi guys

been looking to head to oz for the past year or more to get out of a depressing and debt ridden republic of ireland and looking very likely that i will go in the next few months

likely be heading to the perth area or so

been a big honda enthusiast for a few years now

my first honda was a type R civic EK9 that i had for 3 years and built up to quite a high spec with a 238bhp b18c

sold that over a year ago now and bought myself an s2000 AP1 model which i still currently own

i also had an EK4 SiR for a few monthes last year but sold it in December and bought myself a nissan silvia PS13 sr20det

sorry if i ask any noobie style questions as im not sure how the whole motor system works in oz

can give pictures of my current and previous cars on request if people want a looksie

Welcome
I hear Irish import laws are pretty damn good. You won't see many EK9s during your time in Australia.

Welcome

If you owned the ek9 for 3 years you easily could of brought it in as a personal import. I dont know how you parted with it, it Looked super clean.

Welcome
I hear Irish import laws are pretty damn good. You won't see many EK9s during your time in Australia.

well you can import yourself just about anything you want and as long as it passes an NCT ( irelands test for cars roadworthyness ) you can drive it on the roads

however importing is pretty expensive

lets say i import a car for 10,000 euros to ireland

shipping 700-800 euro
import duty @ 10% of vehicles value 1000euro
value added tax @ 23% of all the above added together 2714 euro

then to get the car registered and on plates i need to pay a 32% registration tax on what the irish government deems to be the cars open market selling price so if the government think your car is worth 5000 you pay 1600euro

just for shits and giggles i put in a 02 s2000 into the vrt calculator and it gave me a vrt price of 3667euro

so before i pay road tax (660euro for 12 monthes tax) and have the car inspected for NCT roadworthyness (50 euro for inspection then 30 euro for a second inspection if you fail your first one) i have a grand total of 18,181 euro that the car cost me

so to have the car sitting in my driveway ready to hit the road it will be costing me 18,891 euro

so as you can see its not all good lol

is anyone able to tell me why exactly it is difficult to get an ek9 registered in australia? they are super expensive in oz

i could buy myself a nice clean example here in ireland for less then 4000 euro

even the spec that my car had i sold it for 9000 euro over a year ago

Welcome

as above, could you explain why it is soo hard to import an ek9 and register it?

also it is mandatory to buy insurance here in ireland and not having insurance is punishable by a hefty fine and losing your license for 6 monthes

i am 22 and i cannot get insured on my s2000 with any insurance companies, only one company would quote me as i already have a policy with them and i was being pretty angry with them after they quoted me 6900 euro for 12 monthes insurance in the car

i know you Australians dont have to buy insurance for some reason as its factored into the car tax or something you pay?

this is one of the contributing factors of why i want to get out of ''ripp off'' ireland

Australia has a car industry so there are laws to protect it from uncontrolled importing. Manufacturers can bring in models but they have to comply with strict design rules. There is a market for bringing in individual cars and small importers can get a license to bring in cars that were never sold in Australia but this is based on chassis not models, so because the civic was sold here by Honda, the EK9 cannot be imported.

The exception is personal imports, if you own a car for more than a year overseas, you can bring it in. This of course makes it very difficult for most people and these kind of cars rare and hard to find, therefore driving the price up.

thanks for the info mooshie

what costs are involved on your side when the car lands in australia docks to actually have it registered and on the road???

When you register a vehicle here there is a CTP insurance (compulsory 3rd party) which you have to get from an insurer (plenty of them), if the car has not been previously registered or has lapsed rego and you need to get before obtaining a RWC (roadworthy certificate). If you buy one that's rego'd, then it will already have the CTP on it. Prices vary between insurers and States. (someone on here from NSW was complaining bitterly about the price he had to pay). This insurance only covers personal injury to passengers and bystander victims, doesn't cover driver or any property damage/loss.

Vehicle/property damage is not compulsory and there are several levels of cover offered.

It does sound like an expensive process leeK9, but from what I've heard it would be more expensive to get a non personal import EK9 into Australia.
This is why some of us guys fawn over an EK9 and would do unforgivable things to have one.

do i need to own the car in australia for a year before i could sel it?

or could i sell my car straight away?

also how much is this rego that i keep hearing about and what is it exactly

and is there anything else to pay to get a car on the road?

Have a look through this website and it's links (probably put you off the idea totally). You'll also find links to all the States transport (registration etc) authorities. Have a good supply of headache pills by your side when you do.
