Hey guys i have recently purchased a eg5 vti civic.
I have decided im not going with an engine swap as i only have my red P's
and im bound to be caught with the engine swap and that 3 year period.

So i was wondering what performance upgrades are available for the d16y1 ?
Iv herd of doing Cam upgrades and running new extractors but what else would you guys suggest ?

Cheers

Dont bother.

B18CR installed > Blue slip > register with RTA > Drive legally ( regardless if you are a P plater in NSW )

do it.

To answer your question, start of with the basic mods, cold air intake, headers, exhaust to help the car breathe better and if you're really willing to spend alot more money, engine work and just chip the ecu and tune. IMO just save the time and money and get a better base motor to start with. The d16y1 will net small gains with all those mods unless you go turbo.

^ As above post
On the other hand if you go engine conversion you'd basically be fine getting either a b16a or b18c (RTA works by displacement of the motors and they allow no more than 15% increase from your base motor which is 1.6l so going to 1.8l is below the 15% mark) You cannot get caught if you do it right, getting the motor blue slipped to change the records and then notify rta of this change.

did exactly that .

i have a b18c7 in my eg , yet to get registered but its the best 40 bucks you can spend unless you wanna pay 800 ish for a engineers cert .

i recently bought the same car aswell .. 1st thing i done was cold air intake. made quite a difference in engine noise and made me fall in love with the v-tech even more .. next would be exaust and extractors for now ..

If you want to stick with the D for now, especially if you're on a budget, I'd really recommend the CAI/getting rid of the resonator box etc. Improves throttle response dramatically, does slightly reduce airflow at low rpm, but IMO worth it. (Sounds way tougher too). How many k's on the clock? Give it a good tune/cleanup - clean out the throttle body etc, new belts, water pump etc. Replacing the fuel pump (even with just an OEM replacement) can regain you a few of those horses that have escaped. After that, go extractors/exhaust and a new tune. Most of it is just recouping lost power due to age, after that there are only a few more horses that can be had with the above mods without getting expensive. And then, as everybody says, why not get a B or a K and work on that.

thanks heaps for your input guys . Ok so doing the d16 up is pointless :)

with the engine conversion , i was told i couldn't drive it because the b series engine was never released in the eg civics so that means it would have
to have an engineering cert , is this true ?
And that P platers cant drive any cars with an engine swap ?

Modifying the SOHC D-series is quite possible but requires a lot of work. It can be done relatively cheap ($4-5k for 110-120kw atw) if you can do most of the work yourself but if you can't I wouldn't bother tbh. Better off getting a turbo!

If you just want some noise and fun then do a cheap I/H/E and enjoy it for what it is.

the D16y1 is one of the better D-series to mod up

its not hard to get them up to similar standards as a stock B16a - but the performance will cap off about there
B16a has alot more potential and better quality available parts

its up to you really - mod the existing engine to the standard of a B16a - or do a swap and have a stock B16a for the same money

that list should get you under the 100kw mark
a stock B16a should get you over the 100kw mark

bare in mind the D16 only has VTEC on the intake side
a B16a has VTEC on the intake and exhaust side - and will make a bit more torque because of DOHC

bisi got 700hp out of his D16y1 with a turbo and some freaky deeky mods ...
(in american the D16y1 is the D16z6 - same engine)

You could go all out America style and do a frank swap.

D16y4 bottom and Y1 head for a starter.

If you wanna do the yank-thing then put a d17 crankshaft in and stroke it to 1.7L :)

TheSaint

is it only the crankshaft that you need?
or are there other parts involved?

another problem would be the ECU to run it - could you do it with a chip or would you need a stand alone?

Needs some other small oil-path mods I think, easy DIY if you can change your own crank.

ECU I have no idea. Would be cool though. I saw some US guy stroke his d17 to a d18 lol. Weird bunch over there...

If all you did was put in the d17 crank then the stock ecu would run it. Obviously once you did the supporting mods you'd need a chip and tune.

Wouldn't be hard to get a d16 to 1.9 or even 2 litre with a bit of cash.

The crank gets you to 1.7. Then you'd offset grind it and use custom rods with a smaller size big end to fit, and that would get you up close to 1.8. Then bore it out and use custom sleeves, you'd be able to come pretty close to 1.9.

Thanks HEAPS for this mate. You have really put in perspective of moding the d16 or going b16.

IV decided b16 is the way for for the price , and iv also found out that its legal for me to drive :)

The car is just sitting in my garage so i defiantly have the time to save .

Dont get me wrong, i loved my Y1 but b series is so much more in front, yes yes u can make a d series monster we've all heard it before haha but you can make a B an even angrier monster and if budget allows, k series are even grumpier monsters..

y1's in EG's are getting rarer than b-series EG's so if you have a nice tight D16Y1 leave it in there and marry it to a brian crower stage3 cam, valvetrain, header and ecu and enjoy it. Consider that doing a swap opens a whole can of worms with headaches with wiring, parts sourcing, troubleshooting and gremlin hunting. This leads many people to get frustrated and lose interest and give up.

There's no point trying to be the fastest kid on the street because someone else will always have deeper pockets and a faster car. Enjoy you civic for what it is not what your mat's evo/skyline/etc can do.
