hi all,

just had my EK4 serviced today at a honda dealer and was told that the left drive shaft needs replacing as the CV boot has cracked.

was quoted $375 fitted for a "re-conditioned drive shaft". just wondering if i'm getting ripped off here. am i better off going elsewhere?

cheers

wont cost you $150

no way.

probably $150 in labour, maybe a bit less.

And parts, well at Repco a brand new cv shaft retails at anywhere from 230 to 400

a reco one from somewhere else probably costs from 100 to 200

$150 is what I charge for a backyarder. Expect to pay between $200 & $250 retail for a change over reconditioned cv

Mechanics usually get them for about $70-90 recoed, so they will probably flog them off to you for about $100-120 + labour. Labour shouldnt be too much all they have to do is undo the driveshaft nut and pop the lower ball joint. Left side means no g/box oil is lost aswell.

BYP are selling new replacement shafts for $350 per pair or $200 each (+GST)

given their rep you would assume they are a good quality product. might be worth seeing what they would charge to do the work

If your paying for $150 for a reconditioned shaft, you might as well buy new driveshaft im offering for that price :)

You can pull it out and put it back in DIY. Takes a bit of fiddling, and annoying shaft nut etc (you'll need a big breaker bar lol) but the reco itself should be quite cheap.

I just got mine done in my EG for the same problem. Cost $140 supplied and fitted for a reco'd one.

cv boot cracked, why replace whole driveshaft?

$15 rubber from bursons and $30 transmission oil.

True. I miss read the opening post and didn't realise this. A local mechanic should charge you about $80 to s&f a new CV boot

was told that due to the no. of km's my car has done (150k) that it would be better to replace the whole drive shaft.

to replace or not to replace?

I got mine done at a small mechanics shop in Campbelltown. Just went around to different mechanics and found this place to be the cheapest. Can't remember the name of it but if I do I'll post it.

If the boot has not split. Changing the boot & re-greasing will be fine

Doubt a Honda dealership would be interested in doing just a boot replacement.

When I worked for Subaru, it was always replace entire compent, never re-build or repair (unless it was an engine or gearbox).

All dealerships work under this mentality, it's how they make their money

Like mocchi originally mentioned, I would first check whether the shaft actually needs replacing, or just new grease and boot. A few months ago one of mine started making odd noises and vibrating. I checked the boot, it was ruined, had spat its grease out (and some muppet who last serviced it did not use the right grease) Anywho, I took it apart and degreased, the joint was in great condition (and this is with over 300000ks on the clock) so I just re-greased and booted and its been fine since.

My point is, find out what actually needs doing, don't go wasting money.
